Diagnosed with otosclerosis

Hello,

I have been just diagnosed with otosclerosis , i went to the the doctor complaining that i found hearing in my right ear is muffled compared to the left and mild tinnitus so after doing tympanometry (which was normal but with absent stapedial reflex) and pure tone audiometry (showed that sadly 😔 i got bilateral moderate conductive hearing loss which was more worse in my right ear) and after asking about my family history and ordered ct scan he notified me with the condition,, i am 24 years old and want to know if anyone has done the stapedotomy/ectomy surgery and has their hearing improved after that ? any complains or side effects for the surgery? And is it safe ? Pls help 😞😞

Hi Kiloa. I'm sorry to hear you have this condition .. especially so young. I don't know anything about it apart from the paragraph I read in Living With Tinnitus. You can search healthunlocked - at the top of the page next to your name. If you put otosclerosis you'll be able to access prveious threads on the topic. Hopefully. All the best.

I searched but not many ppl got that condition,,In short otosclerosis is abnormal bone formation in the middle ear bones (stapes foot plate) that prevent it is normal movement and by that limiting conducting the tympanic membrane vibration (sound waves) to the chochlea fluid(inner ear) creating a conductive hearing loss ,,though this process more rarely may affect inner ear creating sensory neural element and mixed hearing loss.

Hello

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis and I can understand you are feeling distressed. I am in my 70s and first noticed hearing loss in my right ear in my thirties. I delayed getting it checked out until my forties and was then diagnosed with otosclerosis which wasn’t considered bad enough for surgical intervention. My hearing loss in the right ear has worsened a bit over 40 years, now at around 50% and in recent years I have decided to wear a hearing aid which takes a bit of getting used to but helps a bit to improve hearing. That said, I did manage for many years without an aid, subconsciously developing strategies eg only put telephone to left ear etc. I think they only used to offer surgery if the hearing loss was really bad on both sides and the benefits outweighed the risks (very tricky surgery where there is a risk of total hearing loss if it goes wrong) but I imagine it has improved a great deal these days. When I saw an ENT consultant recently to check progress of the otosclerosis, he organised an MRI scan and was surprised I had never had one, so you might want to follow that up to ensure an accurate diagnosis. I hope some of my story is informative for you. Personally I never found the diagnosis or hearing issues have held me back in any way in life. I hope the same will be true for you. Good luck!

Thanks alot jay ,, i know that i can live for some time without surgery and i could try hearing aids but the doctor said for me since am young and the condition is progressing over time and i have moderate hearing loss already surgery is best for me + my hearing loss is completely conductive not mixed with sensory neural element proved by the pta and ct scan showed no otosclerosis where found in the inner ear just at footplate of the stapes near the oval window so surgery will return my hearing to normal if successful ,but i wont rush for the surgery will have more doctors opinion. ❤️❤️

Sounds like you are being very thoughtful and getting good advice which is great. It certainly would be great to have your hearing fully restored. Not sure if the condition recurs? But I guess that it something to check out. Taking your time to fully process what it all means to you and not rushing to a knee jerk, panic decision is, I am sure, a great way to proceed. Wishing you all the best with it.
