Hubbys assessment and now me. (Menopause and liver???)

So hubby had his second assessment ant the beginning of May and it went ok. As I thought might be the case they have given him another month to build him up and get him strong before they make the final decision.

I can see that he wouldn’t cope with surgery at the mo so we are ok with the results.

The reason for not posting sooner is because I’ve not been well. Actually I was not good from when hubby went in with HE back in March but I put it off as I needed to care for him and I’m a typical nurse delays everything.

I was having rigours and vomiting. Anyway the day before we went for his assessment I finally went to the GP. I had bloods done, my urine was orange and when the bloods came back my bloods were off the scale.

His first thought was a blocked duct near the liver. But after more test they are unsure but I have been referred to heptology. You just couldn’t write it.

My friend who is also a nurse showed me an article about the link between menopause and liver problems. Has anyone else heard of this.

Blooming heck, if it doesn't rain it pours, fingers crossed you get answers soon and are ok. Stress can also affect your well being and no doubt you've been running on high adrenaline for ages.

I have not heard about a link between menopause and liver problems, although I do know that oestrogen can have a protective effect for lots of things. So I would not be surprised if there is a link. Anecdotally, my Hep C did not start playing up (such that I could get a diagnosis) until I was well into menopause.

when you say off the charts what were your numbers?

Hi - I'm in a similar situation in that my husband was diagnosed with cirrhosis last year. Long story, NHS did not tell him his liver was in a bad way, just the usual 'come back in 6 months' . They could have saved him a variceal bleed if they had advised him properly ...

However. I have also now been put under the care of the hepatology department where he is being treated. I knew I had fatty liver (found out about 4 years ago) Only now, after what happened to my husband, I realise of the potential dangers of that. Also my liver numbers have been quite high for the last 10+ years at least, probably coinciding with the start of menopause. A couple of times I have managed to bring the numbers dows with diet and exercise but doctors never seemed that concerned.

I also have autoimmune issues (thyroid and psoriasis)

I think that in women, liver, thyroid, skin are all linked. And I have a feeling it's all liked to the gut, with hormones also playing their part and therefore making menopause a crucial time.

I do wonder how many people would show some kind of liver issue if they got tested with an ultrasound. Probably more than you'd think.

Hope you & your husband are doing ok? I saw your post as I have just had some bloods done & 3 of mine have come back out of normal range. I am post menopausal and is interested to see if there is a link. I'm going back to my GP for a follow up appointment next week.

My abnormal bloods are for :

Raised ALP 157 u/L

Serum Gamma GT Level 66 u/L

GFR Calculated 63.

Hi there.

When o spoke to GP he said no but I have read papers saying it’s possible.

I have an appointment with the heptologist next week so I am going to ask them xx
