Antihistamines and NAFLD

Hi! I was recently diagnosed with non alcoholic liver disease a few months ago.

I’ve been suffering really badly with my hay fever this year. I’m currently on 120mg Fexofenadine, I have been for several years, and Dymista nasal spray. I was just wondering what antihistamines others with liver disease are taking? I’m not planning to change anything until I speak to a GP, as I understand I need to be careful with what oral medication I can take, the earliest appointment is in 5 weeks though, but just interested to hear what others are able to take, so I can have some ideas to take to the GP?

Thank you!

Is the Fexofenadine working for you? It is quite often prescribed to liver patients to try to counteract the maddening itch (pruritus) caused by bilirubin build up. So if it's doing the job with your hay fever there probably isn't any issue with it and your liver.

That’s good to know, thank you! It normally works really well but I’m really struggling to get on top of my hay fever this year, I’ve already had 2 ear infections as well because I’m so congested and my sinuses are so blocked and inflamed… hopefully when I see the GP in just over a month they can help!

Thank you

You can ask a pharmacist for advice - fatty liver probably doesn't impede on things you can safely take. A month is a long time to suffer.

Thank you… I spoke to the pharmacist and all he said was to speak to the GP… even the nurse who I’ve seen for my ear infections said the same thing… which would be okay if it wasn’t such a long wait for an appointment.. so frustrating! It’s good to know that antihistamines should be ok with my liver, my GP said when I was first diagnosed that I would have to be cautious with what medications I take but didn’t clarify any further as to which ones she meant.. I know my Fexofenadine must be okay or she’d have stopped it.. thank you!

I suffered really badly with hay-fever until I was pregnant with my daughter...used everything under the sun...obviously couldn't take drugs whilst pregnant...Doctor advised to try acupuncture...it was amazing...not really suffered since...42 years ago!!!My daughter also suffered really badly from about 2 onwards.. had to be hospitalised on one occasion....so we tried acupuncture on her.....it also worked really well and she rarely has to take drugs to help.

It may be worth trying...Good luck !!
