I’ve recently been diagnosed with fatty liver disease and would to know where to find information about meals, foods and treats etc……can I eat chocolate ever again!! lol

I am already trying to lose weight as I need to lose 5 stone, I just want to make sure I don’t make my liver any worse.

Hi - my commiserations. Try seeing a dietitian via your GP / Consultant. Plenty of tasty options out there and try not to obsess about it!

I didn't go on a diet. My cholesterol was also sky high. I gave up the bad stuff:

Saturated fat (no butter, cakes, biscuits, etc): butter, cream, hard and soft cheese.

Fats restricted to olive oil and benecol (butter spread)

Red meat, except for once a week.

No processed food: ready meals, ham, bacon, sausages, pork pies, etc.

Sugar and alcohol.

I also gave up wheat except for one portion of wholewheat pasta every 10 days. This has been an absolute game changer fkr me and I suspect I have an intolerance.

Significantly upped: fish, chicken, fruit and veg.

Cholesterol normal, hope the mildly fatty liver is and I've lost 2.5 stone in 9 months.

The above was triggered by some mildly elevated LFTs. I'd had a cpl of glasses in the evenings for years but also our diet didn't bear close scrutiny from a fat and carb perspective.

My kpa score was 239 and an ultrasound noted my liver was diffusely fatty.

The real trigger for a battery of tests was raised ALP, disproportionate to the others. My Dr's think it relates to teriparatide for osteoporosis and will resolve.

Good luck. In my view carb heavy, processed diet, which includes sugar makes you crave more food. I don't crave now and have lost the pick tendency.

Sensible decisions; eat well, get some gentle exercise and build up gradually. If you say you're never going to eat chocolate ever again the only thing you're going to do is eat chocolate.

So, lots of fruit and vegetables, lean protein (chicken, fish, lean red meat), low fat/fat free dairy. Make simple switches, white bread to wholemeal bread, load your plate up with protein and veggies and aim for smaller amounts of carbohydrates like rice, pasta, potatoes. If you're drinking alcohol, stop. This makes a huge difference to your liver.

With the exception of alcohol don't cut entire food groups or things you enjoy from your diet. It's only going to make you crave things, overdo it and then feel guilty. Just have less of the thing you want. So instead of a normal bar of chocolate, switch to a treat size or fun size bar. You still have what you want then!

thanks for the replies folks…… I’m slowly learning what I can and can’t have anymore it’s opened my eyes to how poor my diet was!!

I’ve already made huge improvements to what I was eating which has resulted in me losing weight.

I only have chocolate on a Friday night now along with a home made pizza…. Although I think I’m going to stop the pizza as I can’t really reduce the bad stuff anymore than I have.
