hi everyone my daughter is an alcoholic and has many health issues related to her drinking. She is waiting to do a home detox which is being arranged through turning point. (She doesn’t want to go to a clinic) She was previously given a date for this but was told by the doctor at turning point that he required her to have some more blood test done just to make sure she would be ok to be at home with detoxing.
Me and my daughter went up to see her drink Counsellor who told her that she can’t do a home detox as her bloods had all come back very bad and if she was at home doing a detox she would decline very bad due to her very poor health . They told me that her liver was in a very bad way and she will have to go to a rehabilitation clinic asap. I’m so worried about her, is it too late for her to ever get better? All other test that she’s had have been not good at all. She’s only 33 but she’s been drinking since she was just 12yrs old. I’m worried it’s to late for her.

Hi Roy good question!! I wish I knew…. her dad was an alcoholic as well and he took his own life when she was young but she was already drinking before then. She stopped drinking after a detox a few years ago but somehow she seems to end up hanging around with the wrong people…. i.e…. Other drinkers. I hope she does get the right help soon.
Hi, I also drank heavily for a long time. After my diagnosis of cirrhosis my life changed! It was enough for me to seriously look at my life.
To succeed you really got to want it (I know it's a clique), but it's true.
Changing your circle of friends, organising support is key (it doesn't have to be AA). There are many organisations out there, you may have to try a few to find what suits.
I NEVER thought I could break the habit, but having the diagnosis kicked me up the ar*e.
I have a second chance and I've never been healthier or happier.
I REALLY wish you guys all the best, it really is a case of 1 step at a time and don't look too far ahead and get overwhelmed.
It’s not too late. She does need to stop drinking though. She’s clearly motivated to do so or otherwise wouldn’t be trying to set up a home detox. Her health is obviously not good enough at the moment to do this…so please do encourage her to detox under the medical supervision they are advising. This is very important as detox has significant risks if not properly managed and supported. The end result will be worth it…as without alcohol she has every chance of recovering. I was very unwell when diagnosed with cirrhosis. I was in hospital with a deep rooted infection which had triggered my liver into failure. I had an emergency detox and haven’t touched a drop of alcohol since(March 21). My health has improved immensely. In fact it’s only when I have my six monthly checks that I remember I have cirrhosis! It’s amazing how much the body can recover when the cause of the damage is removed. She has every chance, particularly given her young age, of living a full life. Try to persuade her to detox as they advise. She will need ongoing support for a while to remain abstinent, but the effort will be worth it.
