Good day to all. I am new to this very informative sight and appreciate any comments. Firstly I am a former heavy drinker in my early 60’s who completely quit alcohol one year ago. In this year time frame my ALT/AST numbers have doubled from 68/50 to 118/82 and my GGT has gone up from 183 to 233. Every other blood test normal. Hep A,B and C tests normal. Liver, gall bladder and pancreas Ultrasound normal. My primary doctor not sure what’s going on and told me to stop taking any joint supplements I am on. I feel completely normal, thin and work out a lot. I have had three colds this year which is a lot for me. I’m really wondering if it takes a very long time for your blood work to return to normal after stopping alcohol or if something else is going on and maybe should follow up with a hepatologist.

Liver enzymes continue to rise
Good Morning. As far a drinking goes I can't help with that, sorry. Have you been diagnosed with having cirrhosis? In comparison to liver enzymes - my GGT is 579,ALP is 978,ALT 94,Ast 121.
I have to redo bloods in 10days time.
I have Primary Biliary Cholangitis & have already had a liver transplant due to this.
My consultant is not overly concerned at the minute as I have, in his words "only have recurrent PBC & not cirrhosis"
You should seek advise if you are still concerned.
Hope this helps you in some way.
Hi Hawaii, quite a few things can lead to a rise in liver enzymes. And if you are taking some supplements or indeed any other medication those can influence those results. I wouldn't jump to any conclusions yet, but do as you doctor suggests then get a retest. It could just be a temporary blip, which are common. So have a retest in a few weeks then take it from there.
Hi Hawaii first well done for giving up I know it’s difficult I had to do it, but with the other problem if you have a liver team please speak to them more the coordinators. Good luck.
Stay safe All
