How long have we got? I just need info and experiences please

Hey all, I've come on here because I'd like some more info on liver failure and the helpline isn't open until Monday so I'm hoping you guys can help?

My 93 year old grandad has been in heart failure for some years now and we know his organs are failing. In the last few months though, his tummy has been swollen and he has pain in his right side. 2 days ago he started going yellow. He has had paramedics out and they advise hospital but he said he'd rather let nature take its course (fair enough) he is still eating buy not much. He is up and about and pottering roubd the house as normal but just sleeps a lot. Is this the late stages of acute liver failure? It's the yellow skin bit that's got me worried! They live 3 hours away and I don't know if I need to get up there super quick or if we have time? If he was bed ridden I'd be up like a shot but I don't know if this can go on for days or weeks or months?? Sorry for the long post 🙈 xx

Unfortunately, This is going to be one of those difficult situations where there are no right answers.

Each person is different and your grandfather’s age may be a factor as it does seem that his organs are now struggling to cope. I personally think that the best thing you can do is to respect your grandfather's wishes and allow him to end his days the way he wants to go.

Hopefully, you’ll find some comfort knowing that you have respected his wishes, and allowed him to go with dignity and respect.

While this is a difficult subject for anyone to talk about. I think if when my time comes, I’d rather be at home rather than be hooked up to a load of machines that are only prolonging the inevitable. 93 is a good innings and you must have plenty of happy memories to cling onto.

Try to remain strong, and put on a brave face. But be prepared to let go, when the time comes.

Hi, my Mum and Dad both had liver failure at the end of their lives. The thing is that livers can be very unpredictable. I’d say visit sooner rather than later. You’re better to go when your Grandad is still more alert and able to have a conversation with you. It may be more distressing for you if he gets more jaundiced and less mobile. The guide the hospice gave me is that when they’re getting worse each month, they’ve got months, worse each week they’ve got weeks and worse each day they’ve got days. But this is very rough and ready and there are so many exceptions. I agree with Alan, I’d rather be at home where loved ones can visit. I hope this helps.
