Diagnosed with Fibromyalgia 20years ago, diagnosed PBC 9years ago. Now been given the news that I will need a liver transplant in the next two to three years. I am looking for any reading material on how to stay healthy and loose weight before I have to have my transplant.

Hi Betty,

Welcome to the forum.

If you have a liver condition, there are some special considerations you may need to make in your diet to stay nutritionally well and to help to manage your condition. Some of these are specific to certain liver diseases, others relate to how advanced your liver disease is. We therefore always suggest that people should discuss their specific dietary needs with their own doctors in the first instance.

Has your liver specialist referred you to a hospital registered dietitian yet?

Best wishes

Thanks for the reply, no he has not referred me to the dietitian yet but that’s a question I can ask at my next appointment. Next week I go for the camera in the liver and next appointment in three months. I go on my own to these appointments and don’t know what to ask. Anything I should be asking?

Hi,

You may find this link useful to look at before your appointment, it is for our 'Patients Charter', and details what people with liver disease should expect from their care:

If you are in the UK, you can always ring our nurse led helpline and myself or nurse Kirsty can talk with you. It is open Monday to Friday 10am to 3pm on 0800 652 7330

Best wishes.

Hi Betty,

As Trust says, you will get to see a dietician, and it’s worth asking for an early referral, you’re right to be considering this now.

The other advice I was given was about keeping fit to be able to cope with the recovery. Possibly the hardest thing I found immediately after, was moving up the bed in hospital with no tummy muscles on one side!!!! I was given exercises to do beforehand, just wish I’d done more......

It’s always a good idea to take a little notebook and pen with you into consultant meetings. Jot anything down before that you think of. They’re very good and do understand.

If you have any questions about what to ask beforehand then do come on here and ask them.

Wishing you lots of luck for the future, and remember you’re not alone.

Andy.
