One year wait for reconstruction?

Hi,

I am sure there must be a few of you out there that can answer my question:-

"Why is it that some ladies can have a reconstruction at the same time as mastectomy, yet some of us have to wait a year?"

Is there something that I am just not getting or being told?

Take care all x

Hi I was offered Reconstruction straight away but I turned the offer down as my youngest daughter was only 4 years old and as I was separated from my husband , I just wanted to get in and out of hospital as quickly as possible. I think it depends on the person and their circumstances at that time ?

Hello Angiehall08,

That is unfortunate and unusual! I had both mastectomy and reconstruction at the same time.

The only time I was told I would have to wait a year is if I just wanted a mastectomy first, then later decide I want a reconstruction after because having cancer makes u a priority and once it's removed ur no longer a priority, then u go on a waiting list.

Maybe it depends on the hospitals procedure of where you have the operation? Maybe ask ur breast care nurse for advice? That's if you haven't already done so.

Hope this helps

Take care
