Chest port

Hello. My partner fitted a chest port last Monday so that she can have her chemotherapy through it. She's had a fever for 2 days now. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I ended up with sepsis from my chest port. It was only ever used once so I had it removed and a picc line put in. It eas much easier and less painful.

Thank you for your feedback. Her fever literally started the next day. Did yours happen over al longer period.

Not really it was within a fortnight. They couldnt use it as the swelling was so bad. They removed it when doing my mastectomy

I also had this done. Extreme rises in temperature shouldn't be ignored, during any stage. At one point I had be hospitalised. Written information should tell you what to do if temperature exceeds a certain level. If in doubt, consult the named Breast Nurse.

Tests were done to try and find the source of infection, but were unsuccessful. I had to stay in hospital on antibiotics for several days until stable. This was midway through treatment, which was suspended. The port wasn't removed until after I'd had the course of radiotherapy. But, it will depend on the individual.

Personally, I'd say seek advice about any concern. Nurses are very nice and certainly don't mind giving reasurrance 😊xB

It sounds like it could be infected so I would advise contacting the team you're under or even going to A&E as it probably have to come out and then antibiotics 🙁 I know it's a pain but better to be safe xx

Hi ,I had one put in right side but unfortunately I developed a blood clot so that 1 was removed and had another put in the left side . This 1 lasted all my treatment but I too had a few high temperatures and was hospitalised twice ( overnight once and a weekend the 2nd time)because of it .Like the others i'd get in touch with your nurse and they will check it out to be on safe side .

Hi Ks1966, I had to have 3 chest ports. I would think your partner has an infection so talk to her cancer team immediately. They can remove it and put in another (I'm speaking from Ireland) so all will be okay in the longrun. Best of luck to you both.
