Osteoporosis and replacement hip….

I have severe osteoporosis and I’ve been told that I need a hip replacement. Is this possible if the bones are not strong to hold screws, rods etc??

Has anyone else been in this situation?

Hi mollysuki,

I had a total knee replacement in 2012 (due to longstanding osteoarthritis) and this has been fine - no problems.

Then in 2015 following a fall I broke my right hip and was fitted with a dynamic hip screw. It was following this that I had a DEXA scan and was diagnosed with osteoporosis. I was shocked at this diagnosis having only had a TKR 2 and half years earlier, and also the fact that a DHS had been inserted successfully at the time of the hip fracture. This too has caused me no problems.

I have just had my third Aclasta infusion for the treatment of osteoporosis having previously been on Alendronic acid which had not suited me.

Everything so far has been fine. I hope these comments help.

Take care.

hello I also have bad dexa score (around -4.6) and had new hip 3 years ago - it's brilliant (couldn't walk any distance) BUT do the exercises before and after

Hi mravazhamier, that is brilliant for you and your comments and advice should be encouraging for mollysuki.

I would have thought so too but my mum has had osteoporosis for at least 25 years and she’s had both hips replaced for osteoarthritis - one around 2009 and one in 2016. Neither surgeon thought it would cause a problem or need any modified procedure.

Thank you all. That makes me feel better. What exercises did you do mrravazhamier? Thanks again 😊
