Osteopenia and HRT

I had an early menopause (about 43 years old) I'm now 49.

Last year I had a (private) dexa scan that showed I had osteopenia in my spine (-1.8) my hips are fine.

I didn't have hrt because I felt fine enough not to need it.

I didn't know that taking hrt would be good against the prevention of osteoporosis. The drs never told me this.

I have since been back twice to the drs asking to be put on hrt. They are refusing stating nice guidelines, early menopause before 39 even though I've read that hrt is good upto 60 even after the menopause. So I'm stuck. Any advice on how to proceed. They just tell me to take vit d calcium and walk lots. Which I've always done anyway.

Yes, I do the same, also Nordic walking. Have never taken bone medications and my bone density has been improving. I'm 72. Here is my story:

Well...I am 71 years old and I talked my doctor into allowing me to go on HRT because I have osteoporosis and refused to take any of those awful bone meds. Most doctors won't do this, however, because of the skewed, ridiculous study done years ago that freaked all the doctors and women away from HRT. Just keep asking and talking to your doctor about allowing you to do this..or shop around for another doctor who's not a coward....

I had an early menopause and I refused to take bone meds after my diagnosis last year.

The first GP at my surgery refused HRT because I was 60 but he said he would refer me to a menopause clinic. I went to another GP at the surgery she agreed to trial me for 2 years. I did say I still suffered occasionally from hot sweats.

I was going to ask about Raloxifene which is mentioned on the ROS website if she had not agreed.

This all confuses me. When in my 50s my rheumy advised me to take HRT (high risk of Osteoporosis). My GP complied and I took it for 3 years while still under 60. I didn't need it for menopausal problems as I didn't have any. In fact HRT caused me problems as I developed very heavy and painful periods. At age 60 I was diagnosed with invasive hormonal breast cancer. Now 68 I also have Osteoporosis. So by taking HRT I didn't do myself any favours at all!!!

Hrt is know to cause breast cancer. I won’t take it. In fact I stopped taking it, the doctors are right. Eat lots of calcium enriched food, walk. Weight bearing exercise is good too.
