Knee revision with Osteoporosis

I have had RA for 40 years and osteoporosis for about 10. I have compression fractures of my vertebrae. For 2 years I self injected with Forsteo which improved my bone density and now I have a Prolia injection every six months.

I have 2 replacement knees, 2 replacement hips and 1 replacement elbow which are all over 20 years old but now one of my knees has worn out. I see a surgeon next month. Will he be able to give me a bone revision with such bad osteoporosis.

Let's hope you get positive news - I understand that if your 'bones are strong enough' they still consider doing such operations.

I think it unlikely for anyone to be offered spinal surgery because that is much more tricky and the risks too great ( several ops, pins / nuts n' bolts coming out and doing damage to the spinal cord having to use leg bone to support the 'mend' and leaving a second weaken pinned bone). All a bit high risk!

However with a knee that is so different if the area of bone to 'hold the replacement part' is sound enough then I would think your Consultant will consider it worth while to keep you mobile, able to weight bear etc.

You say you have had impovements with the Forsteo and your on the Prolia do you have an fairly up to date bone density scan, that might give you a good idea of the what the bones heath in your hip/spine are doing. The fact that you have had all the replacements for more than 20 years is also I believe a positive sign.

I do hope your appointments goes well. Let's hope you hear from someone who in the same situtation with a positive outcome.
