Were you given and do you follow really strict instructions on how to take this medication?

You should also have been given guidance on how to protect your stomach.

If the side effects continue you need to tell your doctor.

I definitely think you need to see your doctor sooner rather than later. Unfortunately the medications usually prescribed for stomach protection also lead to bone thinning, so it is a bit of a conundrum.

Do you have your t-score?

I would go back to your doctor. AA is not agreeing with you. It is always the first OP drug issued to patients in the UK. It is the cheapest. You are experiencing distressing side effects from this drug and they are listed as the most common along with other side effects.

The ROS told m that the drug with the least side effects was sodium risedronate. Took it for two years but gave up following skins issues which have since subsided. Good luck.

I, too, have taken weeklyAA for two weeks, following instructions to the letter, and had a very upset stomach. Spoke to doctor yesterday and he is changing it to risedronate. Fingers crossed will be better.

Seeing doc next week will mention issues thanks for your help x

I too took it for two weeks. Followed directions too. Was told nothing about protecting stomach or having to do so. I was to take it in an empty stomach first thing in the morning with nothing to eat. Poison. It caused gas heartburn and body pain all day. None if which I had before.

I had an allergic reaction to AA and had to stop taking it. Been prescribed Risedronate, which is a bisphosphonate like AA. I don't know whether it bisphosphonates or just stress that is making me have so many gut problems. I already suffer from IBS but I have found since taking bisphosphonate (both AA and Risedronate) my gut problems have got worse. I have been told that if you are taking tablets you can stop taking them if you have side effects, but if you have an injection or an infusion you just have to put up with the side effects, which I understand is the next course of treatment. It seems to me that a lot of practitioners are of the mind sometimes that one type of treatment suits everyone.

I wouldn't take any of those awful bones meds no matter what. I feel they should all be taken off the market, because of the awful side effects they cause.

If you want to know about medication and possible interactions with other substances ask a good local pharmacist not a Dr they have much more idea.
