Travel insurance

Hi I’m recently diagnosed and taking hrt for some protection as still not sure about taking other drugs. Has anyone had any issues with travel insurance In UK if decided not to take take drugs advised by gp? Not sure if they’ll accept Hrt as appropriate medication as gps don’t want to prescribe for osteoporosis and I’ll only do it if you have menopausal symptoms. I don’t want to be bullied into not be able travel or take the meds.

No problems. I don’t take meds and too old for HRT. Asked if taking any meds, but after declaring all my medical conditions, never asked re OP meds. Sometimes asked about T scores. Mine are not good!

No problems just declare your OP and list hrt.. they will probably charge extra for a declared illness so that you are covered while away.

I’ve used Sainsbury’s online but always phone to check and the only thing they’ve asked is whether I’ve had a spinal compression fracture in the last two years. Nothing re meds, which I don’t take either.

When I was first diagnosed I rang my travel insurance to tell them and they were unconcerned as I have never had a fracture.They put it down as being informed.

I should imagine there are thousands of people who have OP that aren't aware of it that also have travel insurance .How can they say that if you did fall and break something it is due to OP and not the severity of the fall? I have two sisters both older than me who have had a broken leg and ankle respectively and neither one of them has OP.

Hi this is a difficult one. In my experience I have found every insurer to be slightly different.

I do know that if you have been recommended to take a drug and you are not taking it, you are only covered if you have something in wrighting to say the doctor reccomending it knows you are not taking it and is ok with that.

Insurance companies will scrutinise a person's medical records if making a claim.

They do not want to pay out.

For example if a person has an accident and has not told the insurer they have IBS then they will be unable to claim as you must tell them of everything that's on your medical records.

Make sure you ask that they are covering existing illness.

As for falling and having a fracture how are you going to prove that your osteoporosis was not the cause.

It may cost more but who wants to go away and not be covered.

I know of a tragic case where a friend of my son's fell ill in Greece the doctors there could not help and he needed to be brought back to England.

The insurance company would not pay out £26.000 to get him back to England.

Why?? Because he had failed to list that in the past he had been attacked and had his jaw wired.

He died in Hospital in Greece.

Don't take any chances it's just not worth it.

Hi I always declare my os and my previous spine fractures. Usually it asks how long since last fracture. Also if you are on medication. It does make the insurance slightly dearer but it's not worth not declaring os or any illness. Because all in insurers will try to get out of paying . If God forbid something happens . Whether it is related or not. I take all meds on hols this includes morphine

I always declare everything. Never been asked if offered OP drugs and declined. Just my t scores sometimes. And if I’ve had fractures. And I’ve had about a dozen insurance policies. Many more quotes.

same as for Maggie6 and Annelii - I rang my travel insurance provider to tell them that I had been diagnosed with OP. They asked if I had had any fractures and as the answer was no they wrote to acknowledge that I had advised them of the condition. No additional premium and no questions about meds. Hope your company take the same attitude.
