VITAMIN D DOSAGE

Is there a maximum Vitamin D dosage that should not be exceeded? If one doesn't get out much in the sun, is 5000 IU or 125 mcg safe?

I added up all my supplements (I started using Better You DLux 3000 Oral Spray, since I was concerned about not getting enough sun). My total came to 5,700 IU or 142 mcg, but I'm assuming that the D in some of my calcium and multi-vitamin supplements might not be totally absorbed.

My D blood level was 53 (range 30 - 100) so I started supplementing with the Vitamin D spray.

Personally I take 5000 icu in summer and 10,000 icu in winter , take this with k2 mk7 which helps it get to the right places , my levels are high end of normal

5,000iu is The Vitamin D Councils's recommended dose.

I'm smaller than average so aim for 4,000 in winter & 3,000 in summer.

Don't forget you need magnesium to ensure calcium is directed to your bones rather than arteries, & also boron.

I don't take a multi supplement as they aren't absorbed as well as individual micronutrients, some being water & some fat soluble. D3 spray doesn't need fat to be absorbed well, but tablets/capsules do.

I take a mineral supplement with boron in the evening on an empty stomach, & magnesium on an empty stomach at bedtime.

If you want to learn about vitamin d supplementation, I recommend the facebook group “ Vitamin deficiency - Open Discussion” . Lots of excellent info in the files and knowledgeable people there. Basically though as I understand it, you’re not going to overdose on 10,000 it’s a day provided you take sufficient magnesium, vitamin k2 7 and boron. Good luck.

This is a really interesting question bessygo . Please do contact our specialist nurses if you'd like some more information - you can call free on 0808 800 0035 or email nurses@theros.org.uk. There's also information about vitamin D on our website: theros.org.uk/information-a...

Please give the osteoporosis helpline a ring as vitamin D can be quite complex.
