Water filters and osteoporosis

Do water filters remove all the minerals from tap water as well as the nasties (ie heavy metals etc)? If so, could they contribute to osteoporosis? Thanks.

I found that my filter altered the pH of my Ca containing tap water from 7.2 to less than 6. I therefore stopped using it. Whether this would contribute to OP I don’t know, although I think not.

While on holiday in the Highlands of Scotland, I noted the pH of the tap water was around 6. Whether there’s an increased incidence of OP in Scotland, I don’t know.

I think my water supply is ‘safe’ . If you are in doubt about yours, try to get it tested. Best wishes.

Thanks LynneH - good idea to test ph of water. The water filter company were somewhat evasive when I asked them.

Hi. I have an Epic water filter which claims to remove fluoride as well as chlorine etc. Chlorine is a type of bleach although will evaporate if the water is left uncovered in the fridge overnight.

I have read that Fluoride is a known contributor to osteoporosis. Many countries have banned it being added to water supplies. I do not believe my area has, it depends where you live. Most water filters do not remove fluoride. It is difficult to make general comments about water filters as they are not equal in what they do. Many do remove good substances as well as harmful although the amounts are so tiny, one would hope our food supplies us with what we need. Dido.xx

Thanks for the info Dido. I've since discovered alkalising mineral drops that can be added to filtered water and raise the pH as well as remineralising it. Not sure how much they help with OP but I also have acid reflux and they are supposed to help with that.

Thanks again

All best

Anne

Hi Annelii. Thank you so much for posting your water filter question. I have revised my previous research, checked out with my water board and found that Fluoride is not added to our water locally. I've been using an expensive filter unnecessarily. What a wally. Made me realise to triple check research in future that it applies to uk. So much on line is usa. From my nutritional studies, acid reflux can be helped by vitamin B Complex supplements. Something to check out or try if you haven't already. Dido. xx

Thanks Dido. I use the filter for heavy metals too but I’m not 100% convinced. I have started adding remineralising drops to it to try and raise the pH which is supposed to help with acid reflux. Will look into the B vits, thanks for the tip.

Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (with the the mother) just a tablespoon diluted in water is very good for acid reflux, alkalising the body plus many other benefits for the body. On and off, I have it twice a day before a meal. It's inexpensive and totally natural. Dido xx

Hi Annelii

Acid reflux can also be caused by stomach acid not being acidic enough, therefore the food doesn’t get properly digested, leading to gas building up in the stomach, therefore to a reflux.

By adding MORE acid this can be improved.

If you Google HCL for acid reflux, there’s lots of information. I’ve copied and pasted the first link.

“Taking betaine HCl with meals not only can bring indigestion relief and serve as one of the most effective natural heartburn remedies, but it will improve digestion and help provide all the benefits of improved absorption and assimilation of nutrients. ... Worth looking into. I think you will find that this is how Apple Cider Vinegar helps, because it’s ACIDIC, I’ve just tested the pH of my bottle, and it’s 4.5

Best wishes
