I had 5 injections of prolia then just decided to stop it when I moved to another state. No one told me about the need to get on some other drug afterwards. In the 2+ years since I stopped I have had 2 commpression fractures in my spine, surgeries on both thumbs to remove cysts and bone spurs (my thumbs are still enlarged and don’t bend much), and my ring finger knuckle is also enlarged. Although every dr I have been to tells me it is just arthritis, it all started after I began taking the prolia. I have been an active person all my life but now find myself limited due to my back and fear falling. Despite being off of prolia for over 2 years, should I go on something else or just continue to fight this via diet and exercise?

You can get some advice from the National Osteoporosis Society. nos.org.uk/

If you're not in the UK there's bound to be an equivalent organization in your country.

I would ask if Prolia has already done its worst as I believe it leaves the body quite quickly (hence the rebound effect). It may be that an alternative medication for a couple of years could be helpful even at this stage. I think that teriparatide is often considered as a bridging medication as it actually builds new bone, which you need, rather than damping down the bone remodelling cells, which is what denosumab did in the first place. It can only be prescribed for two years. But the NOS should be able to help you figure out what is your best plan, and then you can go to your doctor with good information.

Best wishes.

I was given teriparitide (forteo) before the prolia - it caused a rash so I was taken off of it. That is when I was talked into taking prolia. I should have listened to my gut telling me not to do it but I wanted to be able to remain active - I have a horse property and I love to cycle. Now I am afraid to do either for fear of falling. Thank you for responding and the suggestion that I contact the osteoporosis society here to see if I am past the period of prolia having any other effects and what their recommendations might be moving forward.

All the best. I do hope you find some good answers. it's a bit dated now, but the basic information in it is still valid I believe, so have a look at my post from a while ago in case you can get some pointers from it. And do let us know how you get on.

Anyone gone off Prolia after just one injection. I am hoping I can. Do I need bridging medication just for that?

I've read in more than one reputable source that you can stop after one, and only one, shot of Prolia without fear of spontaneous fracturing. After two or more is when it becomes a probability.
