I have just been diagnosed with Osteoporosis I sustained a fractured vertebrae in March it has been suggested that I could have an infusion either once or twice a year which I would prefer than having to take tablets which have nasty side effects has anyone had infusion ? and how can I prevent further injury to me back as the pain is horrendous

If you mean Zoledronate (Aclasta) I had one last December. I felt no ill effects, and with Adcal D3 twice a day and a diet high in Calcium and Omega 3 fish oils, my calcium and Vit D levels are good, I don't need my next one until next year. I had 4 fractures in my spine, and my GP put me on morphine (Fentanyl patches and Oramorph). The pain is still bad, but bearable. Hello Mollyemma

Not everyone has side effects from the alendronic acid tablets (although I did). You can always start on those, which is the norm, and stop if you have problems. I had five fractures and was diagnosed with OP in 2015. It has taken some time to recover (still ongoing) as I had lost strength, mobility and flexibility. I was able to take Strontium Ranelate but unfortunately that is being withdrawn this month, so I am going to have to find a replacement. (Not very happy about that!)

However, I think that as well as medication, it is important to really look at what you are eating, the supplements you take, and the exercise you do. I have been steadily building up the exercise I take and now do aqua aerobics, and normal aerobics, plus walking. I never get into bed without doing some stretches for my spine first. I thought I ate plenty of fruit and veg but now I am eating even more, and prunes every day! And as well as calcium and Vit D, I take K2, magnesium ... Without really meaning to, I have ended up drinking very little alcohol (which is not good for your bones anyway). I think the biggest effect on my recovery has been from exercise.

My advice to you is read what information is online - and there's a bewildering amount of it. Or books if you prefer. You can't do everything that's suggested but work out a programme that seems right for you - and then stick to it as best you can! If you are on Facebook, there are several groups for people with osteoporosis, which I have found really helpful.

Wishing you well!
