I know of two people who took ill on holiday and used their UK health card and it was accepted without question one in Portugal he had a serious chest complaint and spent 3 weeks in hospital before being allowed to travel home the other had a heart attack and had a stent fitted he was in the Canaries both cases they didn't have private health insurance

That’s good to know and it obviously worked out well for them. Unfortunately for a lot it doesn’t, personally I wouldn’t travel without adequate insurance. If they had needed repatriating then they would have had a hefty bill to pay.

we had the same in Switzerland, all the hospital wanted to see was the EHIC card, which I believe covered all my hospital treatments. However I don’t think it would’ve covered anything outside basic treatment eg the helicopter ambulance, escorted flight home or repatriation if it had been needed.
