Since being diagnosed last October with Angina, I am under one of our local GPs, and she asked if I wanted to join a Angina Management Group. I said yes and it has been very helpful. In one of our sessions, the heart surgeon was explaining about how blood flows around our body from the heart to the lungs and brain, and what are good and bad messages. She then produced some small soft toys, a Dolfin and an Alegator. She explained about Endorfins and out came the Dolfin dancing on the table, and went on to tell us what Adrenaline was and then she produced an Alegator. So the dolfin was a sign of good news, but the allegator was not good and should be avoided when possible. We thought that that explanation and the use of soft toys was very funny and a great way of explaining a complex subject so simply.

Hi Plum53, thanks for getting in touch. Apparently this is only one of two in the UK and is run by the NHS. My wife and I went to monthly meetings where we were shown how cholestral forms and how it can affect the flow of blood. The heart surgeon was at times like a teacher, she drew diagrames using differant coloured pencils to show us how the blood gets round the body, and how angina can be caused. She also explained about stents and heart by pass operations. All in all, she and her other female collegue who showed us the benefit of breathing exercises were fantastic. I have now been given a year off before she needs to talk to me again.
Sounds great I would definitely go if there was one near me. Basildon is the nearest heart hospital. Broomfield in Chelmsford can do heart tests but they would send you on if you needed stents or a bypass. They do have rehab classes there which last 6/8 weeks.
Hi again, we are very lucky to have this programme in Derbyshire, and by attending the programme we have learn't how to live with angina as well as putting our minds at rest and not be afraid of it.
