Olive oil guys… in a dark can… best you can afford.

My ontological perspective..:I’ve always seen that OL and fish/ oil as medicine.

My own researcher bias; my own HDL is now over 2 and I eat a supper every night full of crap.

My sister who had cancer two years ago and thankfully now two years cancer free also takes fish oil in capsule form every day however she doesn't always make good diet choices and like me is morbidly obese (an expression I really dislike).I have been eating an oily fish salad diet five days a week for over a year now not lost any weight at all and my two days off salad I don't eat fatty food and I am still careful, so can't help asking where am I going wrong?

When I told my GP about my diet he said that's brilliant and your cholesterol is down to three keep up the good work, so why aren't I losing weight.

I think your recommendation is sound advice hence my response.

Usually if you are not losing weight it is down to eating more calories than you are burning. Olive Oil although a healthy fat is quite calorie dense. Perhaps you could start weighing and measuring your food including the oil to see how many calories you are actually eating. I use My Fitness Pal a free app recommended by my GP for years and lost 30lbs and kept it off. Other apps and calculators are available of course. Losing weight is a slow process and you should always speak to your GP about the best way to go about weight loss.

Have you/could you ask to see a dietitian at your Gp? They are more knowledgeable on nutrition than GPS I believe and I have had the fortune to have a session with a really good, empathetic , interested NHS dietitian. (Other sorts are no doubt available!!)

Oily fish -depending on portion size-is quite calorie dense too so maybe 5 days a week is quite a lot, possibly 2 days would be a better balance with lean protein on the other-white fish/chicken…? . What are you eating for other meals on those 5 days?

Time restricted eating seems quite a popular way to control diet and to ensure when you do eat you are very aware of what you are eating. I haven’t tried it full time but did find a 5:2 diet was an effective way to control weight.

Wishing you good luck in finding the right thing for you. We are all different and have varied and unique experiences about and with food and health. If you keep an honest food diary with times and quantities a dietitian should be able to advise you well on what, when and how.

Thank you for responding.I actually spoke with my GP yesterday afternoon and he listened and is referring me to the diabetic dietition as I'm borderline type 2 and I didn't want the medication as I knew it can be treated with diet. My salad always had an oily fish not oil itself my fault it was the way I wrote about my diet. I love fish so along with all multicolored salad was a hardboiled egg and salmon. I always try not to eat it all mostly because I get full before I have finished. I have the salad at lunchtime each day then before 6pm I have a bowl of chicken soup or some noodles, no salt on any of my meals and I don't buy bread at all. I eat lots of fruit try to stick to berries and whilst I know fruit contains sugar I don't go mad in overeating fruit.

My GP had also prescribed a gym prescription which I'm going to try as I'm at the point over 12 months of salad that I'm willing to try anything.

My other problem is the statins no matter what time of day or night I take them I really don't feel good a couple of hours after taking them, my cardiologist changed my statin but that was worse so I've gone back to my old statin.

The two days I don't have salad I eat any veg as it's filling and healthy and have eggs with tomatoes and mushrooms again nothing fried. For some unknown reason I was wanting a roast chicken dinner the last couple of days and went to a local butcher and purchased a ready roast dinner with all good veg and lean chicken and am really looking forward to that today.

I really appreciate everyone's input here, thank you.
