Bendoapnea

I sometimes find that when I bend down for example to tie my shoelaces, I get breathless. I researched this some time ago and found a condition called Bendoapnea, which apparantly can be a sign of heart failure.

A couple of days ago I attended my GP surgery for my annual checkup with a nurse. We were discussing my shortness of breath and I mentioned that I thought I might have Bendoapnea. The nurse had never heard of this condition and she suggested I see a doctor.

The following day I had a consultation with one of the GP's and I again mentioned Bendoapnea but to my surprise she had never heard of it.

Just wondering if anyone here suffers from this, and has a GP which knows about it?

Good morning Geoff 47. I am surprised the nurse or doctor didn't get you checked out with a Spirometry blow test to check your lung function. Do you get breathless when walking or going up hills. I have put some weight on around the middle and have severe copd as well. So wear slip on shoes mainly now. If I am bending down or doubled up I too get breathless with my condition because you are squeezing your stomach and lungs when bending. I thought I was just unfit when I started getting out of breath at 62. But it was copd. Hope you get it sorted out and have a good day. Brian

I think it's important that your Dr finds out about your breathlessness more than try to put a label on it yet. There is a problem there and it must be very worrying for you to try and pin it down to a name. You cannot go on felling this way on such simple tasks.

Personally I would push for more tests, I and many others suffer similar but mine is certainly heart related and unfortunately has become a normal part of my waking day.

I really hope that you get the answers you need, but feel that it may need more tests { pushed by you } to get them.

That is odd because I have a pacemaker and have exactly the same problem. I was wondering if it needed a gyroscope fitted! Will certainly investigate Dr Google

Yes, I've heard of it. I also get breathless when I bend over to tie shoes, look on bottom shelves etc. Incidentally, have you ever noticed in the supermarkets that everything you need is either on the top shelf where you can't reach, or the bottom shelf where you can't read the labels - and get breathless?

Hi sorry to but in on your comment to another post I get out of breathe when I bend to tie my shoes what does mean then?? It's fairly recently I've noticed and when I bend over to run a bath just bending down at all to be honest.

I am probably missing the point, but I’m not sure what you are asking here. I did say “etc” so that means other instances. If I briefly bend down I’m more likely to get dizzy. I also think my hiatus hernia could affect my breathing when I bend over. I have never asked a doctor the reason in my case. How about you?

Yeah sorry I was just wondering what getting out of breathe when bending down means? Sorry if that is confusing I haven't had a chance to mention it to anwayone as its fairly recent.

Thanks for your reply. I think it can be from more pressure on your lungs and heart especially if you have fluid around your heart, or hiatal hernia. I think you should get checked by your cardiologist as he/she would know more and be able to treat it if necessary. Best wishes.

I've just googled it, and it does seem to be a real thing. I'm glad you posted about this because I had never heard of it, but have suffered for years. Whenever I have to bend down, I'm out of breath in seconds, even if I take a deep breath beforehand. I haven't been diagnosed with heart failure, but do have a pacemaker and COPD (which is well treated) and don't think it's anything to do with those.

Time to do some research, I think.

i am a member of another group on which this gets mentioned, yes it's real - if you could bend at the knees, instead of from the waist, it might help avoid the problem and it would be much better for your back

Hi Geoff47. I am aware of this problem but never actually known what's causing it its a recent thing for me I've never heard of this condition before but looking it up sounds alot like how I feel when I bend down to tie my shoes or to run a bath or generally just bend down. Hope your able to find out what's causing your issue x

I get this, but not from heart failure... it's sadly the belly getting in the way and causing issues.

Worth noting that this isn't a condition in itself, but a symptom of a condition. The two often get mixed up.
