Travel insurance with ICD

Hi everyone,

I had a cardiac arrest back in February this year. I was out running with a friend, and towards the end of the run we did a sprint finish resulting in my heart stopping and I collapsed.

Luckily my friend knew CPR and saved my life that day. He did it till the ambulance came and I’m eternally grateful.

In hospital I had an ICD fitted. Since then my recovery has been going really well and I’m able to get back out running again which is great.

I have a holiday booked soon but I was wondering if anyone has any advice on what’s the best travel insurance to get if you have an ICD?

Any advice would be very helpful.

Most travel insurance providers now cover a range of heart conditions. I am personally with Staysure as I have a rare congenital heart defect and was surprised at the number of different complex heart conditions that they provide cover for.

hi try a company called insure for.com I have a holiday later this summer and although I don’t have an icd fitted I do have cardiomyopathy and heart failure. The price I got from them was less than half of anywhere else and I have a friend who last year in turkey their 1 year old daughter was admitted to hospital for treatment and were left with a heafty bill. When they returned to the uk insured or paid all the money back to them without any issues.

Hi Pete I tried various companies after having my CRT-D fitted at the end of April and staysure came out the best. It was cheaper in the long run to take out the insurance for a year rather that one trip.

A lot depends on wether you are having on going treatment . I recently took out a yearly travel policy. I have a pacemaker, I’m 100% paced and have heart failure. I’ve got other health issues which stem from the various heart conditions I have . Yearly echocardiograms are also included as on going treatment. I eventually managed to get a policy with All Clear for £706 , but this doesn’t include cancellation for any holidays , only medical treatment and repatriation. It’s a minefield, it’s very important that you get your medical history from your gp and list absolutely everything. Fortunately I’ve just returned from my first holiday since my PM and all went smoothly, and I’ve got another trip booked for September.

No they haven’t found any reason why it happened yet. All scans on my heart and brain were completely fine . No hereditary heart problems in my family so it’s really quite a mystery! I was 27 when it happened and completely fit and healthy. They might never know why it happened but the main thing is I’m alive to tell the tale! The SICD is a great device so that gives me some confidence to get back out on the road again. I have been advised to keep my heart rate relatively low and try to avoid doing sprints for now!
