Hi

I had a heart bypass last year and now looking at getting travel insurance sorted for a trip away.

I am just confused as to what conditions I list on the travel insurance application. It is heart bypass and high cholesterol or is it now considered I have heart disease/failure also.

I never had symptoms pre operation so never had angina or heart attack etc.

Thanks hive mind

You would need to call them and talk it through if you're not sure, they're all different so would be best if you spoke it through.

From my experience though, you have to list everything as excluding something could invalidate your insurance.

You have to advise the prospective insurers of every medical issue you have ever consulted your GP about.Even the small things, you may feel are insignificant . .

I have several chronic illnesses and I always use StaySure and they were not expensive at all.

You can also arrange it all online.

Just make sure you tell them everything.

I had HF after covid last year. I booked early in year to visit my daughter in Australia . Saw consultant who said I was fit to travel. On the way I picked up covid, again. This affected HF & I ended up in hospital for 3 days. Aus GP said go to private hospital as they have same problem as here with ambulance queues & I needed to be seen quickly.

I took out med insurance, it was £1500, gulp, for 2 months, with All Clear insurance. I returned home 3rd of February & am still waiting to be paid back. I sent all of my paperwork & they have now contacted my GP here. I wouldn’t use this company again.

Thank you for your response. It's hard to know everything when this are so inter connected and discussed as one. But very good advise here.

Just list what you have, but after the bypass and being on statins do you still have high cholesterol?

A heart bypass shouldn't increase things price wise, my car insurance for example didn't change at all

I have used a couple of these websites to get travel insurance. They all use the same question format with drop down boxes or boxes where you start typing a condition and it will expand I.e asthma it then asks if you have been hospitalised in the past year how many inhalers you use etc. they also do the same for everything else. I have used staysure and all clear and found them to be very expensive £700 for one trip to Sicily last year) look at your bank to see what they can offer. Both nationwide and Barclays do travel insurance. I have just taken out yearly world wide travel insurance with my bank for £12.50 per month. You can speak to the insurer on the phone after you have completed the online form.

We have travel ins with our bank but they will not cover me for my list of ailments ,I have had to get a stand alone one for myself. I tried so many companies and they ranged from over £1000 to one I eventually got for £376 for an annual one and that is from Staysure. So make sure you do shop around . It takes a lot of time but worth it in the end.

I had a quadruple bypass some years ago and have been abroad a number of times since. You should include everything.

Actually on the forms I fill in there isn't the really the option to leave anything out, but it might be an idea to do the quote with a live person then you can be sure and advised as you go through it.

Have a good holiday!

Hi I use a company called insurancewith.com, they ask what Meds you are on and with each med there is a drop down list of conditions and you just pick the one you have, at the end you can tell them any conditions that you don't take anything for.I have always found the price really good and I use them every time I go. I have had a transplant, I also have osteoporosis, athritis, hernia, psoriasis and a few more. Before my transplant I had cardiomyopathy, heart failure and an ICD once again all declared and good to go. I hope you get your insurance sorted and have a fab holiday, we are off to Spain on the 24th I cannot wait. Char

Staysure are very good but just make sure they know you have never had angina or a heart attack, makes all the difference in price.

If you do an on line check I find the questions are asked automatically.

If in doubt phone them and tell them EVERYTHING!!

Hi Carlg. I cannot help you really because I am having exactly the same problems! The Prices I have been quoted, so far, are absolutely ridiculous! I haven't had a 'Heart Attack' but have had a Bypass and Pacemaker and now on Lifelong Warfarin. I am giving up slowly and thinking just to stay in the UK! 😊 Getting fed up of phoning round!

Totally confusing I agree – I looked for insurance to Australia, and was totally lost as to whether to declare USA which was to be a couple of hours transiting, not leaving the airport but paranoid in case something went wrong in that short time. So having gone through a couple of (confusing) on-line forms I at least understood the questions, just not the "correct" answers and found that actually putting down all my questions and emailing the customer support helpline they were pleased to help, and took the time to explain what / why etc. I chose to email rather than telephone simply to ensure I didn’t forget things / get muddled etc and had an answer I could refer back to. It turned out that in my case I didn’t actually need to insure USA as only there short time transiting and not leaving the airport. Hope that helps.
