Myocarditis aged 18 with troponin levels of 15000

Hello. my 18 year old daughter started with what we thought was Strep (sore throat and raised temperature) on the 2nd of Jan. Two days later we had to take her to A and E as she was suffering from chest pains and her heart was racing. In A and E she tested positive for flu and her Troponin levels were high. Over the next couple of days she was monitored constantly and medicated anti virals, antibiotics, beta blockers, etc etc. Her Troponin levels went up to 6000 and then 15000 and she was moved to the cardiac ward. She spent 8 days in total in hospital. She was discharged following an ECG (normal) chest x-ray (normal) and MRI that showed Myocarditis. Her troponin levels had dropped to 56. She has been advised to have complete rest for 4 weeks followed by a phased return to college (She sits her A levels in June- She should have been doing her mocks whilst in hospital!) She has been told that she cannot exercise or exert herself or do anything that may increase her heart rate for 6 months until she has a repeat MRI. Until then she has to take Bisoprolol, Ramipril and Lansoprazole. This has all been such a shock, up until a few weeks ago (when she stopped to concentrate on exams) she has been training for a minimum of 3hrs a week as a competitive sprinter (plus going to the gym) Most of the Cardiologists seem confident that she will make a full recovery but there was one who said that with such high Troponin levels they would expect damage had been done to the heart.

I have so may questions but for now I want to know if anyone else has had a similar experience and if you can offer any comfort/guidance?

Hi Sadheart,

I was diagnosed with myocarditis in July 2022 - If you click in my profile and my previous posts you'll see my story, or if you type myocarditis into the search bar you'll see other's stories.

In most cases, myocarditis is self resolving, and as your daughter is young and active that works in her favour. I was advised 3 - 6 months recovery, so if they have advised a few weeks then it sounds positive!

If you've any questions please ask, this is a really supportive place!

Thank you for your reply Captain Birdseye. She has been told it could take between 3 and 6 months for recovery. Currently she is completely exhausted after any activity eg (showering and washing her hair). She has followed doctors orders and rested completely. To be fair she couldn't really do anything else, even trying to read for any length of time is too much for her. She hopes to try going back to school on a phased return in just over 2 weeks (as advised by the doctors) School have been excellent and will do whatever she needs but at the end of the day it is her A level year and that can't be 'managed' she does have a lot of work to get through before June.

Hopefully she can take it as easy as possible at school... there's so much pressure on them at that age so anything the school can do to support is a plus.
