Hello. This may seem minor, but I have been having heart palpitations for 2 days now very frequently and I’m a little concerned that they aren’t stopping, I used to get them every now and then when I was active and when I wasn’t. I tended to get them more so when led down in bed at night and would wake up shaking. Is this something I should get checked out with my GP or will it go away? Thank you for your time

Heart palpitations- cause for concern?
Hello
There is every good chance this is nothing and the more you think about it the more they will happen
If you feel anxious this can be a cause of them to
But anything that is bothering you and you are not sure of I would get checked out or ask your Doctor and if nothing else it will give you peace of mind that everything is ok x
Thank you! I do suffer from anxiety which won’t help. I also take lithium so was wondering if it could have anything to do with that, although I have been taken this for many years. One good thing is that it has made me think about restarting my running again! Thank you for taking the time to reply x
Hello
Anxiety can certainly play a part not sure about lithium but your Doctor would reassure you
Glad you are going to take up running again , like you say that is one positive x
I'm not medically trained, but I think you should see your GP, face to face, before you recommence any demanding physical exercise.Make a note to discuss all of the drugs you take, including over-the-counter stuff, supplements and herbals (including teas). Also the amount of coffee you drink (if any) and alcohol (if any). Some might not work well with lithium. Also, when on prescribed medication, a sudden change in diet, especially salt content, can have unpleasant side effects.
Disturbed heart rhythm could result from a wide range of things from anxiety, to mineral deficiency, to prescribed medication or an underlying physical issue - and that's just the short list.
So, I think you should get this new symptom checked out sooner rather than later, but don't worry too much which will very likely make it worse!
It’s always worrying when you get a change in symptom. I would call your GP, see what they say, and ask them if it’s fine to start running again.Just being cautious, till you know if your continuous palpitations are anything that GP thinks needs investigating. Or nothing to worry about.
Dear Emeraldgreen.
So sorry to hear of the Anxiety that your heart is causing you at the moment.
I am not medically trained , but I do recognise that Anxiety has an effect physically on the body. { thats why I have put Anxiety in with a capital A }
I think you have almost answered your own question,
This is not normal for your body so you need to get it investigated, so this is not minor at all, especially to you, which will also affect your loved ones,
hopefully it is nothing and that knowledge will also help with your Anxiety.
Please keep us informed, we are all behind you.
Take care
Most palpitations are harmless, but it is wise to contact your GP. You will no doubt be fitted with a Holter monitor for at least a 24 hour period and a cardiologist will do the reading. I have frequent ectopic beats. My cardiologist advised that they tend not to treat them unless they impact your life style. I understand your anxiety. Best of luck!
Hi. I had had palpitation attacks since I was in my early teens but as I got older they got worse, more frequent and harder to manage. I had an aortic dissection in 2017 and open heart surgery. While I was i hospital in my second week after the op, I had an attack. The Consultant team member who came to treat it asked if my gp had ever given me anything for them. He was surprised that I hadn't. He put me on beta blockers and I haven't had an attack since.Worth talking to your GP about it, although, as I said mine said they were nothing to worry about so didn't prescribe anything. From my experience even when having an attack they don't show up on cardiograms or normal heart monitors.
Hope all is ok soon for you.
Best wishes.
Denise
Hey did you go to your gp then?
