When can i have dentist treatment after heart stent surgery
What I have been told / have read is that invasive dentistry (fillings, extractions, crowns etc.) is not really recommended while you are on dual anti-platelet therapy (DAPT) e.g. ticagrelor and aspirin. This is because you bleed more easily and your blood doesn't clot so quickly.
I'd talk to your dentist and see what they say about doing a routine checkup because good mouth hygiene also protects your heart.
Hi - I’d go for your check up and give the Dentist a full list of the medication you’re taking. Most even make you do that for their records which maybe includes a record of your wider medical history including HA & stents etc as well. Hopefully your check up will show no treatment needed but if it does the Dentist will be able to decide if it can be carried out. I’m due for at least one broken root extraction + maybe a couple of implants but they’ve had to be postponed - however, I’ve had fillings and crown refitting work performed. Usually, if you’re only taking Aspirin they’ll be fine re most things but if you’re also on Ticragrelor (perhaps only for 12 months after HA) or maybe Warfarin they’ll be pretty cautious AFAIK. Good luck with the check up👍
Your dentist will advise you well. Give them a call.
I’m a dentist. Recently retired. Just tell the dentist your medical history and what drugs you’re on and they’ll know what to do. The anti platelet drugs can be a bit of an issue for some treatments such as extractions but even then it isn’t that difficult to stop bleeding. Dentists are well used to this kind of thing. They see people like you every day.
I couldn't even have a hygienist clean for 6 months after my CABGX2... !
Thanks for all the advice. I will go for my check up and discuss with my dentist .
I had 2 stents put in my heart- it was not surgery- I was not cut open to have these stents put in- I would say you can go to the dentist right now if you want to
