Hi everyone,

I'm getting really fed-up I understand that Covid threw a spanner into everything but mum Cardiologist seem to wash hands after her surgery, mum is now under the care of her GP.

Mum had Quadrupled bypass last December so it's just over 3 months. She had been having palpitations on a regular basis but these seem more prevalent over night. Has anyone have any experience with this please?

There is so much going on at the moment, just when we thought things were improving mum was sent to have a echocardiogram done to try and establish weather there was anything causing the palpitations but the probing around the chest area seem to reignite the chest pain (tightness across the chest just under the breast area)

The Bisoprolol tablets seem to make her feel very weak but she was told she would have to stay on this for life.

Is there a private Cardiologist in London someone can recommend please?

This must be very worrying for you. Has she not been put in contact with the rehab team? Mine have been really helpful, visiting, and just being available by phone. The BHF nurses can offer advice, and there is excellent information on the website. We are not supposed to give recommendations of specific people because of the risk of misleading information.

Hi, thank you for taking time to reply. I will have a look on the BHF site. Mum Rehab team has been okay in terms of support but that's as far as it went. The burden is now with my mum GP for further investigations. Mum had a Echocardio on the 8th March and still no results as yet. This is something which we really need cos it will help to clear up any concerns. I am not one to knock the NHS but on this occasion I feel really let down.

Hi,I have had similar experience. I am 60 and had my quadruple CABG end of November last year and was put on bisoprolol, which made me wheeze. They changed that to atenolol now and that is much better. Straight after surgery I felt like I had a a belt strapped around my chest, like a too tight bra. I have now discovered that this is caused by the muscles between the ribs, that were stretched and torn during surgery. I do my arm exercises every day and sometimes 2x a day and that makes it feel better. Sitting for long periods also seems to aggravate it.

I still don’t have my energy back to what I used to be, but am slowly working on this. I can walk for 2 hours if I want, but will be exhausted for the rest of the day. I have now divided it over the day to do 2 shorter walks of half an hour and try to walk faster. Little steps..... the 5-6 weeks expected recovery was just a myth for me and since I have been on this site, I understand it is the same for many. I have adjusted my expectations and hope to be feeling more myself by the anniversary of my operation. That means I should be able to go for 13 mile walks and 30 mile bike rides in hilly countryside. So still high expectations for myself. Take it easy and take each day as it comes.

Speak to your GP and get in touch with the cardiac nurses. My GP was in contact with me every week for the first 2 months after surgery. The cardiac nurses tried their best, but didn’t really know me, so just got generic advice. See if the GP is willing to change the meds to see if there is a difference.

Good luck and hope your mum feels better soon.

Hi Jacqui, you are so right about people's experiences 5-6 weeks. It really does take much longer for recovery. My is 62 this year but she has an underlying health condition (Parkinson’s) . I am assuming this is hindering her recovery but hearing stories like yours give me a bit of reassurance that it's still early days.

Mum is on the lowest dose of Bisoprolol 1.25mg I will ask to see if changing makes any difference . She is also on Aspirin and Rusvostatin. Can I ask which statin they put you on please?

Since December there are very few instances when mum can say she felt a bit normal. She managed to do a bit of walking and when she did she wasn't out of breath or anything . Which is positive but like you have experienced the pulling and tightness across the bra line can feel uncomfortable. Are you still taking pain killers? Mum is still on paracetamol.

These palpitations she is getting comes on all of a sudden and she explains how she feels as if her heart is jumping. It also abruptly stops but she getting its several times over the night.

Also mum gets alot of tremors this is possible the Parkinson’s but she also get alot of sweats. Have u experienced this?

I am worried sick and being the only one helping mum it's been very hard. I feel very sad for anyone who has to go through this it isn't really easy.

With respect to the palpitations. Yes I have similar. Had my echo last week and am waiting for results. Initially the palpitations were explained by the upset of the surgery, as they have to stop your hard. At night they seem to be more prevalent because it is quiet and you’re not distracted by other things. With the regular walks I do now, they seem to have become less, but they still surprise me sometimes.

Hi, do not lose hope, just continue with medical advice, and tell the doctor how the patient is negatively reacting to the medicine, I was once on bisoprol due to heart palpitations, but due to dizziness, I was switched to metoprol and am doing well.
