My first thought was 'what had the driver been smoking', but you don't say what the odour was...?

If it was diesel fumes then that should have been reported to the company who supplied it, even to the point of rejecting it on health grounds.

There has been the suggestion on here that long term exposure to such fumes is bad for you, but I don't have anything bookmarked specifically to refer to.

We have a diesel car and have no problems with any sort of smell , were all the windows closed right up also the boot ?

As dava pionted out diesel fumes are extemely toxic,,the odour could have been anything,,it is possible the exhaust had a leak.We have had a deisel car for years and have had no problems :)

I`m guessing there may have been some fault with the car by the answers given, we did mention it when the car was returned thanks for the replies

Just a thought, as all modern diesels have cat converters and produce very little harmful rubbish compared to a few years ago, but now we nearly all have air conditioning and there is a really nasty bug that grows in the system, usually detected by a strange almost musty smell, if you have got bad lungs it won't take long to make you feel bad. You can buy a treatment which is a bit like a smoke bomb that you let off inside the car. Clears it in half an hour.
