is there different stages of copd,i was diagnosed 1 year ago
Im sure someone with more knowledge will be along, but I was told what stage I was at when I was diagnosed in May this year. I am moderate as I have a FEV1 of 55%. I have the appropriate medication which I take daily.
I have also been told that as long as I do the right things, there is no reason for it to get any worse than it would with the natural ageing process. So the most important thing is to stop smoking if you haven't already done that. Then avoid excess pollution, smoke and other potential triggers. Exercise, aerobically if possible. Maintain a healthy weight and eat the right things.

hi
there are 4 stages of copd.
as lynne says, there is no reason, for a automatic progression, if you no longer smoke then you have removed the cause, exercise and a lifestyle change will slow the progression.
i am severe 34% i still go out each day i have done the same thing every day 365 days for the last 4 years , and i intend doing for the next four.
the link may offer guidance.
Hello John, copd progresses at different speed in each person as far as I'm aware.
it progress slowly in most peope, they do not really notice the gradual changes that are happening until it becomes more difficult doing normal thing. For instance, if you are dx with mild copd in your forties you could probably jog up a flight of stairs easily ( if copd is your only illness) as It moves on over several years to the moderate stage you may be able to still jog up the stairs but be winded when you reach the top, a few more years you may be in the servere stage you might find it a struggle just getting up the stairs and may need to stop and catch your breath half way up.
This is all based on my own understating of this illness I am in the mild stage and have been for a couple of years, hope this help you
Ps some people with severe copd can do more then people with mild there a so many variable with this illness, smoking accelerates the progression of the stages threefold.
thanks everybody for your time and answers john
