well yesterday was a fun day!!!! On my early morning dog walk I failed to see a patch of black ice, fell over, and have a nice, messy, displaced distal fracture of thr left radius! I knew it was broken by thr crazy angle my wrist was in. Managed to stagger home and phoned 111, who answered pretty quickly. A friend drove me to the Urgent Care Centre at the Wansbeck Hospital( my second home) where I was seen, x rayed and temporary cast put on all within 40 minutes. I am waiting for a phone call today to book me in for the thing to be pulled back into line under a nerve block and a proper plaster cast put on. I do have osteoporosis so realise that any time I crash onto tarmac I am quite likely to do serious damage. Ironically my monitoring Dexa scan is booked next week. Being on my own now, I am discovering a whole new world of doing things with one hand........
Any day now I should get the results of the high resolution chest CT done on twenty ninth of last month. That is causing me more anxiety than the broken wrist!!

Oh no! How awful and painful for you. I hope all goes well for you today and your wrist heals well. Fingers crossed for the results of your CT scan too.
It's that feeling of being oon tenterhooks waiting for the clinic to phone!! I can't fault the Wansbeck Hospital, I am there for my Respiratory Clinic & scans, but their A&E seems pretty darned good as well!
So, so sorry to learn about your accident Tiggertheterriier, those things do happen,I myself had a very nasty fall 2 years ago,going on a hospital appointment,the hospital ground had not been gritted,& it was very slippy,my leg was so badly damaged that the hospital was considering plastic surgery, thankfully it did not come to that,try not to worry too much Tiggertheterriier ,you are definitely in the right hands, & you will be ok,just the initial shock to our system when something like this happens. that would hurt! Breaking a bone is awful and I hope they get it straightened for you soon. When I broke my shoulder I found it very hard only having one good arm and hand, couldn’t cut food lol. Good luck x
I hope all goes well. My daughter fell and broke her wrist quite spectacularly earlier this year. We had a phone call to say she was in A&E in Wolverhampton- a long way from Essex. Both Wolverhampton and our local hospital did brilliant jobs- it sounds hopefully as if your hospital will too. Very best wishes for a good outcome for the scan too.
thank you. I can feel a bit of the swelling has gone down a bit as the cast doesn't feel so tight. Looking forward to getting it straightened out on Monday morning.
thank you. I am going to see if my CT scan results have appeared on my NHS App today, as it 7 days sinsince it was done. Arm is very painful indeed this morning, wonder if I rolled on it overnight!
what terrible bad luck, a fall in an instant and the results cause so much difficulty trying to cope at home and recover. I hope the procedure goes well and they get your wrist back in a good position. Thinking of you Tigger - take care now - Sally x

So sorry, that sounds awful and not what you needed. I hope they get it sorted quickly. I've fallen on black ice whilst walking the dog, twice in the same week, fell on the back of my head. I was so lucky not to break anything but now I'm fearful every time there's a frost on the ground. It's a horrible shock. Good luck with your scan results too x
it has made me very nervous now. Weather is so cold and I physically can't get my warm layers on over the cast!! I refuse to cut cuffs off perfectly good clothes either! When they put the permanent cast on I'll ask for the smoothest finish they do. Can't do up laces on my sturdy boots either. Xxx

I rolled myself onto the grass verge to get back up, which wasn't very elegant. Most annoying was that not one person who saw me fall came over to help, maybe my little dog put them off! I am booked in on Monday for the straightening procedure. I always, always use a walking stick out with the dog, but not even that saved me, and now I can't use it at all as I need my right hand to hold the dog lead. Sadly, he won't go for walks with anybody else, only me.me.xxx
Well bravo for managing to get home and call 111. But so sad to read no-one came to help or ask if you needed assistance. Perhaps they thought you were some kind of acrobat! I remember tripping up and falling on my chest on a London pavement when four or five people immediately tried to help me up. But that was just too quick for my liking. I wanted was to lay still on the ground for another minute or so!I wish you could fast-forward this weekend and I send best wishes for Monday.
the advice I have always followed, from my much missed Dad, was to stay still for 5 minutes following a fall, then wiggle everything a few times- what doesn't wiggle is broken!!!! Am currently sat here doing my lung clearance exercises. Putting a nebuliser totogether with one hand is quite interesting.....
Putting anything together with one hand is "challenging". Laces must be impossible. You could make a list, one to ten, from challenging to impossible. As for your beloved dad's advice, I've been wiggling my toes in bed for the last two hours and now it's gone 12 midday ha ha. Your dad's advice has prompted me to get up! 😂
laces are a big no, so are zips, getting tablets out of blister packs, opening bottles that require you to push down the top & then twist, getting the dog food out of the tin, washing up and getting the dog collar on the dog!!!! Xxx
So sorry to hear your news Tiggertheterrier. Trying to cope one handed when living alone is hard. My niece bought me a board that had a lip on so that I could butter bread when I had my shoulder done. I have bought zip up boots now so that I don't have the problem of tying laces, not easy after a hip op. Will be thinking of you on Monday and hope all goes well. I had a nerve block when I had my shoulder done and must admit it was wonderful and I felt no pain for days after. Take care x
thanks Izb1, I am going to order some pull on boots online latelater, plus some jogger bottoms and a couple of nightdresses without elasticated cuffs that can fit over the cast. That's very reassuring about the nerve block, I didn't like the look of the rays, but am sure the orthopaedics team have seen much worse!!!!
It hard isn't it, just trying to calm your nerves, but I am sure you will be ok. I try not to worry about things now until until I am sat in the chair and then tell myself it will soon be over x
You poor girl 🥲 living alone and poorly is hard enough without trying to manage with one hand ! I do hope you have family and friends who can help 🤞. I have a CT scan later today and results next week and whilst the procedure is quick and easy and the hospital staff are all lovely I’m always a bit anxious and it’s not even about the results - I’m very much a what will be will be person. I’m not sure what it is 🤔 I think I’d just much prefer to be on my own settee watching tv than doing hospital visits but that said I’m very grateful they’re there and doing a great job for me 😊 Good luck x

Oh dear, let's hope you are sorted soon. Make sure you use your arm when the full cast is on - shoulder movements and elbow as well (if it is a below elbow cast). Also move your fingers!
thanks Germantara, roll on tomorrow when they get it straightened our!!! Managed a little shower last night with a plastic 'shower sleeve' in place - it was absolute bliss!!!!!
