There are some concerns about asthma and ibuprofen. In some people it can trigger asthma attacks. I have late onset asthma and don’t react badly to ibuprofen but it is a very individual thing. Maybe discuss with your pharmacist if you are concerned and weigh up the pros and cons.

I haven't had any issues yet, thank goodness, but if i do I will definitely see my pharmacist x yeah I've taken ibuprofen before and nearly killed myself 😳😅💔. Hope your asthma is ok??

If you have a reaction to ibuprofen tablets then I would suggest you shouldn’t use the gel! There are other similar products that don’t contain ibuprofen and again worth discussing with pharmacist.

I have severe asthma, diagnosed in 2012. I use a small amount of ibruleve on my lower back and haven’t had any issues. I was told by my consultant not to take the tablets.

I use Voltorol pain relief gel. It contains Diclofenac rather than ibuprofen. Voltorol aong with paracetamol really helps with the back pain

My dr prescribed Voltarol for me once, but I found the Ibroleve worked better for me.

I have severe asthma but seem to be fine taking ibrufen. However, I know it's one to be careful with so I'd ask advice first...especially if you've had a bad reaction before!!!

Best bet talk to the pharmacist, being ibuprofen is involved - Could you not find anything that would work that do not contain ibuprofen or other Nsaids.

I have asthma but I don’t use ibuprofen gel as I find it doesn’t help to relieve pain. I use voltarol. It has diclofenac which I find helps to get rid of my pain. X

Hi Yumz

I’ve used it in the past. If didn’t trigger my asthma but it did affect my atrial fibrillation, causing me more episodes of that. I subsequently found out from the AF forum that it seems to be a common problem. Not sure if AF is something you have but it might be worth keeping an eye on the heart side of things, too. I use magnesium oil instead now, which I find helpful.

I hope your pain eases soon, TC

Apparently only around 10% of people actually react badly to ibuprofen.... im one of them

However I can use thr ibuprofen gel for a period of time (for a few days on a bad back usually) before it starts affecting my breathing

i was a bit taken aback when my GP prescribed an Ibuprofen based gel for my painful shoulder. At the time I was still diagnosed as asthmatic. (Not now apparently). It was fine for me, better than Voltarol.

I've used it and had no problems I think it just depends how you react if you find your breathing getting worse then stop or speak to your doctor for a alternative

Hi Yumz199725. I have had chronic Asthma for over30 years. At the moment I am in a flair which is now in its 9th month. I use ibuprofen gel everyday for my arthritic joints and I'm fine. Obviously we are all different, but I have never had any problems at all.

Hi Yumz, local nsaid gel/ cream for painful fingers, knees, etc is very different from tablets . The side effects are much stronger with tablets. I have had asthma with bronchitis flares all my life, and have never had any issues with the gel on painful joints .

Good luck

The gel isn't as much of a problem as the tablets, because you apply it topically.
