Hi all, if the women’s world cup has inspired you to get a bit more active, you might be interested in our keeping active information. Whether it be getting out or a walk, chatting with your healthcare team about pulmonary rehabilitation, or keeping motivated to carry on doing what you’re doing, we’re great advocates of keeping moving.

yes, keeping moving is astonishingly helpful for COPD. Does everyone know about the Exercise by Referral Scheme? GP refers you to a local gym and NHS pays. Good for patients, good for local economy. It should be shouted from rhe rooftops! Best preventative care ever. We’ve gone from unhealthy unsteady breathless 70 year olds to gym bunnies!

This is great to hear Battison!

If anyone isn't aware, this is a regional scheme, so searching online for 'Exercise Referral Scheme' and the region you live in should hopefully point you in the right direction.

Really the best thing ever. We started in ‘baby gym’ where instructor knew our illnesses, watched over us, made us feel safe. After 6 months we got another 6 months free at ‘big gym’. Will save NHS a fortune?

Yes definitely I belong to a lung group breathe easy gym and endeavour to walk 10000 steps a day using a fitness watch to motivate me

10,000 steps is not easy every day! 👍

No it isn’t. In a way you have to get obsessive! My hub with severe COPD could barely walk a few metres up to the shop. He went to pulmonary rehab and it was them who told us about Excercise by referral. I could so see the difference in him I asked, as cancer survivor and diabetic if I could go too. We found it amazing as after work out a flood of well-being happens. that kept us going back! My diabetes drugs have been cut in half.

Ps the problem is, when we come to the end of the free opportunity we, as basic state pensioners, can’t afford to continue

as someone born with pcd/kartegeners is there any exercise regime that you promote. Although the NHS rules for this condition specify various things, they are only available if you live within 4 specialist centres and I suspect if you are mobile and able to travel to them you may get some guidance. I have to have a private physio who comes twice weekly and leaves my lungs clear each time.x

Good morning. The exercise and keeping active advice on our website is general advice for people with a lung condition, it's not condition specific, but if you'd like to chat with us on the helpline (health care advisers, nurses or physio) in a bit more detail, please do give us a ring. We're on 0300 222 5800, 9.15am-5pm, Monday-Friday.
