amazing hospital staff

About 3 weeks ago I was in the bathroom, I just got out of the shower, the next thing I know I’m across the room on the floor with my back against a metal radiator. The noise 😩 & the pain was excruciating.

I ended up in hospital, I’d broken 6 ribs some more than once, fractured shoulder blade & a chipped vertebrae 🤪

I spent 9 days in hospital, the staff were absolutely amazing I couldn’t praise them enough. Thank goodness for the NHS, how lucky are we.

my only worry is getting a chest infection on top of my injuries, I’m using a Nebuliser twice a day, a Spirometer, doing the exercises the Physio gave me & thankfully my Consultant has put me on an antibiotic 3 days a week which I had started the day before my fall, as over the last few years I was having one infection after another & this passed year I was ill more than I was well. So fingers crossed 🤞🥰

Ouch! What an awful thing to have happened to you. Hoping you don’t get a chest infection and continue to improve. Glad you were well cared for in hospital.

Best wishes to you. Xx

Thank Sassy59, yes I am thankfully 😊😊

Oh dear how absolutely horrible for you. I am sure that the pain will make it difficult for you to do your clearance which is so important to prevent an infection flare up. How good that your doc put you on azithromycin before this happened. Try to do your clearance by gently deep breathing to loosen the mucus and if you can find a comfortable position, lie over the bed or the pillows with your chest angled downwards to use gravity to encourage the mucus to run out. I hope that you avoid an exacerbation and feel well soon. Keep an eye on it and if you think that the bugs are multiplying, make sure that your GP gives you another, stronger antibiotic for 14 days.

Cripes I sincerely sympathise Souielouie, so painful I know as I've broken ribs more than once - but not six at the same time! Last time a physiotherapist told me how vital it was to continue to keep breathing as normally and as deeply as possible to avoid mucus sitting in lungs & causing infection. To help with this she said it's reccomended to place a rolled up towel underarm on the affected side(s). It really worked and pain on breathing was far less than the first accident. I suppose the action of holding the towel in place prevents movement while you get good breaths in and out. Hope it works for you. Good luck. P

Oh no, That sounds awful! A slip in the shower or bath always worries me as there’s not much room and lots of hard surfaces to hit - just as you’ve done 🤦‍♀️. I hope you recover quickly and avoid any nasty side effects. Please keep us updated with your progress 🤞💐

TThanku beech, I had got out of the shower, I must have fainted as I don't remember falling. Definitely not a good place to faint. Onwards & upwards 😊😊

oh that is so awful . how did you get help? as regards chest infection do as littlepom says . she is brilliant . have learnt more from her than any doctor .

how did it happen ? do you know /? I ask because i have flown across room on two occasions . have stood up from chair and turned to go down stairs.( i live on first floor in three story house)

I have a damaged leg which goes dead when when i sit still and so cannot move quickly have to remember to pause. the body and lrft leg move and the right leg doesnt so i literally spin and spin across the room fiirst time towards full length glass window on to balcony and landed in settee . sec ond time i was in different room, near to stairs up and down with another glass door open against wall. again i spun round and ended up e with back against glass door. i have a rounded back due to spine shrinking and rounded part of back hit glass . very painful but nothing broken except the skin on my back which bled . We do move automatically without thinking . but i do try to stop to think now . i was lucky not to suffer like you. no broken bones , and you really did suffer . try to remember how it happened . I hope the chest infection does nt develop any more

Souielouie in reply to Jaybird19

aah !! Bless you Jaybird, thank goodness you didn’t break any bones. Take care & take it slowly 🥰

I got out of the shower next thing I know I was across the room on the floor with my back against a metal radiator, OUCH 😫 my husband was out walking the dog, as soon as I heard him come back, I shouted until he heard me. He rang for an Ambulance which didn’t take that long to arrive thank goodness. They were amazing, they got me off the floor using an inflatable seat, it was brilliant. They took me straight to the emergency department & I got a bed straight away because the Paramedics had give me Morphine How lucky was I 🥰 Exceptional service.😊

hi,I suffer from dizziness,so am still struggling with the bath, rather than risking the shower.

Just a question,is the antibiotic you’re prescribed Azithromycin ?

You need to be aware of any developing infection. Take care

Souielouie profile image
Souielouie in reply to Oshgosh

aah !! Bless you that must really knock your confidence. Yes that’s the antibiotic I’m taking & so far so good. 🥰

Oshgosh profile image
Oshgosh

I’ve been on Azithromycin for 4 years.

Mu understanding is this a prophylactic,to keep you well.

You need to be aware that you can get an infection.

If you do get an infection you need to get another antibiotic prescribed from GP and stop the Azithromycin whilst you’re on the other antibiotic

Souielouie profile image

Thanku Oshgosh, my Consultant has warned me about this & has written to my surgery to prescribe Doxycycline in case this happens. 🥰
