has anyone on Fostair found that they have a sore tongue all the time despite washing my mouth out after. I’ve had this a long time now. With lockdown and everything I didn’t like to bother the Drs with a petty sore tongue. I spoke to the Dentist and I spoke to the Chemist and they both said to speak to the Dr. Well I’ve done that now and she’s prescribed thrush treatment. I however think it’s probably the Fostair. Can you get a Fostair inhaler that you can use with a spacer?
Any thoughts anyone please.

Yes you can Mavis, mine is and suits me very well. I dont know if I'm being extra cautious but I do it anyway - always rinse and gargle before inhaling. To my petty mind in making my mouth & throat wet before hand it dilutes the Fostair making it less likely to 'stick'. I use the water I've got to hand for taking Carbocysteine before inhaling, then rinse & gargle afterwards too.
I hate those powdered ones that stick to the soft tissues of tge mouth.
It might be worth noting that sugar feeds fungal infections so you could avoid it for a while. Also taking live yogurt helps get some good bacteria in your system. Personally I take a good prebiotic to be on the safe side.

My tongue has been stripped for ages now and is so uncomfortable. I do eat an activity yogurt at lunchtime and I’ve now got live friendly bacteria in tablet form from Holland and Barrett. They recommended it as I’ve been on so many antibiotics.
Yes do, once you've had thrush its easy to reoccur. Glad you've got a live bacteria tablet. I take a 20 billion one in winter whilst on Azithromycin. Yes I'm afraid sugar is the enemy when you've got thrush 🙄
It’s cruel isn’t it. I know I shouldn’t eat sugar anyway as I’m borderline diabetic. Just to go along with everything else. But not to have it at all. Oh my goodness. Can I do that? I’ll try. I am prone to thrush. I have been for years but it’s never affected my tongue before. I always put some tissue under my boobs as I can get it there. The tissue stops that. I’m not putting tissue on my tongue though. 🤣😂
That’s what mine is. 20 Billion. I’m taking antibiotics all the time for urinary infections. I’ve had nine since the start of this year. I was reading if your vitamin D is low it leaves you open to infections. I suppose that’s my weakest spot and that’s what it affects. So maybe get my vitamin D up and they may get in control again. I’ve even seen a Consultant who can’t find anything wrong. I have suffered with occasional ones before. I’ve had scans examinations you name it I ve been there and got the TShirt..
The asthma nurse or gp shouldve given you one when you got given your inhaler.Theres 2 types a volumatic which spkits into two or a areo chsmber which is a tube.
It depends if you have problems with hands as the volumatic is hard to put to gether and separate whilst the aero chamber is just one piece and don't take up as much room.
Join the club i keep on asking the consiltants and gp gor a new body but no luck.I woould mind being either bionic woman or the six million pound woman.

I’m pretty sure the cause of mine is either the steroid inhaler or the plastic the dentist used used. I had a stoma and the first bags I had were fine. Then there were some better ones come along and I used them. I ended up red sore and had ulcers. So I think that one of those is the cause. My tongue is not remotely like those shown. There were just two that were similar. The redness is in the centre of my tongue going back through. I’ve always thought it may be the plastic the dentist has used but she doesn’t agree. So I’m back to square one. .
Is worth rinsing mouth with salt water several times a day. I find that sorts oral thrush far more than medications prescribed. Once sorted I now only have to do every now and again.
In that case I don't know if thrush treatmet will work because it's not that. I've tried some of the "home remedies" such as rinsing with diluted oil of oregano, baking soda solution, salt solution, nothing helps, it goes when it's ready.
Actually I think it is treatment for Geographic tongue. It’s called Nystan oral suspension. You put a drop on your tongue four times a day. Oh well it’s worth a try.
Nystan is to treat yeast/fungal infections and geographic tongue isn't caused by that, but it might work, medications have other uses besides what they're intended for. It would be interesting to know if it works for you.
I use a spacer when taking Fostair and still get thrush despite brushing my teeth afterwards. Never had thrush before moving to Fostair and been on various inhalers for over 40 years. I’ve also started using Corsodyl after brushing my teeth and that seems to help too. Hope you find something that works for you.
I use Fostair with spacer. Never thought to rinse my mouth but will start doing it. I too suffer with bladder infections. have had 3 this year..so are they caused by Fostair?.
No! They never know the cause of mine. Ive had nine since January. I’m on an antibiotic every ten days for two to three months. To see if it breaks the cycle.
You can get fostair in a powder form, you just need to exhale, put your mouth over the top, then you inhale, giving it the deepest breath in you can manage, remove the mouthpiece, keeping the powder in for at least 5 seconds, then repeat the process a second time. Twice in morning, twice at night. Good luck 👍 hope 🙏 its OK for you as it is for me.
Mine is powder form. I take two puffs twice a day. I’ve been on it for about four years now. I think that’s what causes the sore tongue. I personally don’t think it’s Geographic tongue as I looked that up and it doesn’t look like that. I don’t think it’s thrush either as there is no whiteness.

My mum had a red sore tongue , it was caused by B12 defiency which caused her to have Pernicious anemia , it was a while before her GP found the cause of her sore tongue. I myself have had various inhalers some of which have caused a sore tongue with splits on it when you spread it out. I take Trellegy Ellipta now and have no problems .
Hi Mavary. I had terrible oral thrush using fist air, even when using a spacer it continued. After 6 months I stopped using fist air, took 5 weeks & 5 scripts to get rid of oral thrush. Not been beer fostair for 4 months & not had oral thrush.
I'm prone to sore tongues and mouth ulcers; take after my mum. When I used to take an inhaler which contained steroid I always used a spacer. I was taken off that years ago, but I blame this for causing my thin skin, which makes me liable for wounding easily. Just made a big tear wound on my leg the other day walking into a footstool.My mouth problems has been often thrush, and I found that Nystan usually sorts it very well.
I've also found that an inclusion in most toothpastes, (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate or SLS) can be a cause of mouth ulcers, as do NSaid anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibabrufen. Toothpastes without SLS can be found but it's not easy.
I use Sensodine toothpaste for sensitive gums, of which there are numerous variants. If you read the list of ingredients you'll probably find SLS in your Colgate. I also use Gengigel whenever I get a mouth ulcer flare up. Look on line and ask:- what causes mouth ulcers and sore tongue.
Oh no poor you. I’ve got a tear on my arm from a rose and another tear from reaching in my cupboard and catching my arm on my sweeper. They always tear in a V. I’ve had some really nasty ones from different things. I bruise really badly too.
Yes, same as me. I'm sure it's the steroids, and maybe old age that causes thin skin. In 2012 I scraped my leg getting into a golf buggy, and caused a big three corner tear in my skin. I was taken to hospital in an ambulance, where after a few hours waiting, it was cleaned and dressed. It took 6 months of regular visits to the nurse in my surgery to sort it. Now, I try and get the skin back in position straight away and cover it with a dressing myself. Must keep out infection. If you leave it too long, that triangle of skin dies, which is what happened in 2012.
Ooh! Not nice. My Granddaughter grabbed my left hand and brought it across the front of me. She caught me unawares and I had to stem to the right putting my leg into the screw of the scooter. That was in Ravenna in Italy. I only had a pack of tissues to hold on it and stop the bleeding. A crowd of people came from nowhere and gathered around me. I looked under the tissue and the floor was soaked with blood. I said to my Son you are going to have to call an ambulance. Luckily there was a lovely lady there that spoke English and she called them for me. But that’s how easy it happens. I now regard everything as a danger. I ended up with about 6 cat gut stitches in black. I had to throw away my shoes as they were denim. I tried and tried to wash the blood out but it was useless. I loved those shoes too.
Hi Mavary. I have the same problem with Fostair and a part of my gums becomes swollen and painful as does my tongue and areas of the mouth. I use a spacer always, but it doesn't prevent Thrush. I started to dab my gums with Corsodyl Dental Gel which contains Chlorhexidine Digluconate. This has sorted much of the problem of swelling gums and Thrush, albeit temporarily.
I think I would use the Corsodyl liquid but not the toothpaste as I need the sensitive toothpaste. I use Colgate sensitive. I don’t like the Sensodyne one as it makes my mouth slimy for some reason.
Yes I see. Just want to emphasise that what I use to help is the Corsodyl GEL not the toothpaste. The gel is very different. You put a dab on your finger and place it on the inflamed area of the gum. It really helped me. You can also brush with it but its too expensive to use as a toothpaste. Best wishes and Hope you heal quickly x
Hi yes I had 3 months of oral thrush as I’m diabetic as well, thrush does love a sweet environment. None of the gp’s prescriptions cleared it even though I stopped the fost air. Capryllic acid bought off the internet sorted it finally. Good luck x

I .ve taken " Fostair " for ten years ... day and night .... no probs at all ! , I think this is yet another example of how different we all are , and how we react to all these medications ......I even know someone who finished up in Hospital , just for taking an ........=...........ASPERIN !!! ... follow this someone !!.=.. all you can do is , I suppose is to wash your mouth out after each inhalation ......yes ! use a spacer .- I do ..... perhaps more of the chemical will go down your throat , than hang about in your mouth - I do .... good luck ...😀
Thank you. I always rinse my mouth well after using the inhaler. So I don’t think it’s that. I’m still thinking on the plastic they’ve used on my denture. But who knows. It’s either that or it’s the Fostair. If I’m sensitive to a kind of rubber on my tummy when I had a stoma. It makes sense it could be the rubber they put in a denture. My dentist says no though. Hmm! It’s worth thinking about.
Hi Mavary I’m not on same inhaler but I can use a spacer with mine but still got sore mouth especially when I started new one so now about a week before old one finished I start new one alternatively that has made a big difference and if I feel it coming on now I use cortisol mouth wash hope this helps x
I don't know what Fosair is but I take a steroid inhaler called Trimbow which I take through a spacer and I think I know you can get oral thrush from the steroid inhaler and I get thrush a lot. I used Daktarin make sure you state it is for oral thrush as you get Daktarin for feet as well. I buy it over the counter and it costs about £7. It is a bit expensive if you live on a pension like I do so try and get it on prescription. You are supposed to rinse your mouth with water after each inhalation and that prevents oral thrush from happening. Good luck
I always rinse my mouth really well then drink some water so there’s no steroid left in my mouth so I don’t know why I’ve got a sore mouth. I don’t think it’s thrush.
Well I don't know what could be wrong with your mouth but I would go back to the doctor and tell her you are not sure if it is Thrush and ask for further tests to be done. Good luck for your future.
Sorry of course you are and I agree with you, but when you finish with your prescription I woul wait a few days and if no luck then I would go back to my GP. Do you know there is nothing worse than having a sore mouth. I too have a very sore mouth I have a big ulcer under my tongue, I have had it for over a year so I went to the nurse practitioner and she has referred me to the oral health department of our hospital. So we will see what the dentist comes up with. I can really understand how you must be feeling and it is so nasty, horrible and so painful. If you like I will let you know what they can offer me at oral health. Meanwhile please take care of yourself.
I once had like an ulcer that wouldn’t clear up. At the time I was going to a dental hospital. We had one dentist in our Village and she couldn’t cope with the job. I went to her one day with ramping tooth ache. I couldn’t sleep or antything. The only relief I could get was pouring cold water on it. She wanted to make me an appointment. I couldn’t believe it and said no you can’t do that. Anyway she did the tooth then suggested I go to the dental hospital which I did. Anyway. I asked the girl at the jhospital what the ulcer thing was in my mouth. She didn’t do anything about it. So when the Cosultant came round to check her work I asked his opinion. He said I was going to need an operation on it. He knew exactly what it was. He had to cut into the gum above the tooth and fill it from up there. He said had I left it I would have been in trouble sooner or later. Apparently it was infected and leaking all the time.Let’s hope yours is a similar thing and they can get rid of it. I’ve had no more trouble with mine. Good luck.
I agree the older I get the more problems I seem to develop, I used to never have a sick day and now look ar me!! I hope you are right and me ulcer is something like yours. I think you are incredibly brave to have your mouth cut in order to repair your ulcer, I do hope mine is something like that even though I hate the thought of the dentist having to cut inside my mouth. Did it hurt very much even though you had a local anaesthetic?
To be honest I didn’t feel a thing. He was brilliant mind you I was anaesthetised by the fact I had just lost my Mum. But honestly I had no pain at all. The stitches he put in were annoying for a few days but that was the worst of it. I can’t have a normal injection as I react to the adrenaline. I get very shaky. The injections I have don’t work as well but I never felt anything at all.
You have given me great hope thankyou. I am so very sorry that you lost your mother that is really, really sad, I do hope you can access some help with your family and friends to help with grieving. It is such a very sad time. How are you feeling g now and if you don't mind me asking when did you lose your mum. I know what it could be like for you as I lost my mother a long time ago. I was 8 years and my mother was 31 and she died of cancer of the oesophagus and stomach. That was in 1966 and the treatment was not as good as it is now. Such a terrible loss. So I can empathise with you. I would like to wish you some sort of wellness and happiness for the future.
That was a few years ago. In 2006. Since then I lost my Dad and my Husband. I’m over it now as much as you can be. They will always have a place in my heart though.

No! My Mum was 2006. My Dad was 2011 and my Husband was 2014. So all reasonably close together. My mum and Dad unfortunately was because of age. Mum was 87 and Dad was just coming up to 96. My Husband died from IPF.
At least they were a good age and you have some lovely memories to keep. You say your husband died from IPF I am sorry but I don't know what that is. I hope you might find someone as you are never to late try.
Nah! Not now. I was married for a long time and had my beautiful family. I’ve had a couple of men interested but not me. I like a man’s company and that is it. My Children would like to get me married off but I’m happy on my own now. IPF is Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. It scars the lungs and keeps on scarring making them stiff and in the end you die from it. There is no cure and the life expectancy is between two and four years. My Husband had it four years.
You have had an awful time of it and you have had such terrible losses and yet you find worse in your heart that is helping a lot. I cannot thankyou enough for your support it makes me feel very humbled.Thank you for explaining to me what IBF stands for. It must have been an extremely difficult time for you both to go through, I think you are such a heroine to come through the loss of both your parents and your husband and be there for all the people on this community. I have taken inhaled steroids for about 20 years. I currently take Fostair and have done for about a year. I had a sore tongue for months before the pandemic. Felt like grazed areas . Dentist had no clue so sent me to hospital where I saw a consultant who diagnosed "burning tongue". I was prescribed a course of medication to clear any thrush and Evening Primrose Oil and Thiamine (Vit B1) for a couple of months. Now I just take over the counter Evening PO and Vit B complex tabs. No more burning tongue! Might be an idea to be referred to an oral consultant ? Good luck.
I had the same problem, my consultant changed my inhaler to a different version of fostair called a next inhaler. You could ask for a change. Hope it will help you.
Thank you. I’m speaking to the Asthma nurse on Monday so I’ll see what she says. She may suggest using a spacer first. I’ve been on this inhaler for four years. Mind you I expect I’ve had a sore tongue for nearly a year if not that long.
Hello Mavary. I was on inhalers for a short time until they discovered they did not help me at all. But during thise six months I was told I had to brush my tongue so I bought a special tongue brush. I also gently brushed my gums. Getting all the residue out seems to be important to avoid thrush. I don't know if this will help but I hope you are improvement soon. xx
Hi Caspiana. I did all of that until I had a sore tongue. I still brush my gums and I’ll very gently brush my tongue but I don’t want to do any more damage than I’ve already got. I’m speaking to my asthma nurse tomorrow to see if anything else can be done. Maybe try a spacer. The thing is I’m not sure if it is the inhaler because I had a stoma and I reacted to the plastic they used in that. I think this only started after I had a plate. The dentist doesn’t agree it can be that. So I’m trying the avenue of the asthma nurse first.; it seems a coincidence that a few more on Fostair has reacted the same though.
I used a fostair nexthaler which did make my mouth sore and dry,,as it was a powder after speaking to gp he put me on a fostair which looks similar to a salbutamol inhaler and can be taken with a spacer, which does help.
Thank you. I’m speaking to the asthma nurse tomorrow so I’ll tell her there’s one you can use with a spacer. It is feeling better with the Nystan the Dr gave me but it’s still a really bare patch on it.
Hi! I use Luforbec now. My surgery changed over to it. I don’t seem to get the sore tongue with it although my Consultant said it’s the same as Fostair.
Please if you can try, suck a piece of frech ginger, but the best one is suck litle by little lycorice root, both work as antiinflamatory and produce salyba. There is also some biome brand mouth probiotics.
The you better try the lycorice root, that is not spicy at all, is sweet, and is use for people who is in quimiotherapy in Japan. You can find lycorice as a tee boxes, the root comes shopped, take a piece and put it in your mouth till loose flavor. I use lycorice root because suffer of dry mouth.
