Covid & copd update

Well my husband got his phone call re new treatment.....

He's not eligible even though he has copd, asthma, high blood pressure!

Apparently it only includes people with kidney or liver problems, people who are having cancer treatment or who take daily steroids in tablet form.

So why send him the priority pack in the first place? Grrrr! I'm just relieved he has his own nebuliser.

Doesn’t make any sense. Xxx

This is ridiculous.

I'm sorry to hear that. It's news to me, and many more I suspect, who thought we were eligible. I hope your husband begins to recover and feel better soon.

Yes. Do you mean anti virals? . Thought I'd be eligible after getting covid as I have Bronchiectasis & pseudomonas. But No!! Dr said no box to tick!! Suffer in silence & if really bad I suppose, costing the NHS a fortune in a hosp bed.Not a happy bunny. 🐰 X

I think so yes. I wouldn't have minded as much if he hadn't been sent the priority pack.....

Hope you're soon on the mend.

Dont think any of us can work this out. I am on methotrexate which is an immunosupressant but because my dose is under 20mg I dont qualify, crazy x

Well, this is pretty daft situation, isn't it? I was also sent the testing box and told to contact them asap in the event of testing positive so that I could have the anti-virals, but as I'm not on regular oral steroids, I guess it will be a 'no' for me too!

I keep telling myself that overall, the country has coped reasonably well with the COVID situation, but I cannot get my head around some of the daft things that are going on now.

First they throw us to the wolves - no more shielding. Then they tell all the wolves that it's fine to walk among us, regardless of whether they have COVID or not and then they withdraw the free tests so that many people will no longer do them and more people will become infected.

They single out a group of people to send testing boxes to, costing goodness knows how much, then they go back on the promised medication because said people do not meet the criteria.

None of this makes any sense to me. Am I going mad?

xx Moy

PS Being the old cynic I am, I predict that the lack of regular testing will lead to a drop in the number of confirmed cases and we will be told that herd immunity is working! Bah!

I am shocked your husband hasn't received access to anti viral drugs. How are his covid symptoms? Is he OK to continue nebulising whilst having covid? Wishing him a good recovery.

Thank you.

'Luckily' he spoke to the Doctor on Friday as his breathing had deteriorated, we now think it was covid starting, & was prescribed a 5 day course of steroids. The nebuliser is part of his daily routine so he's just carried on using it.

Do hope the steroids are helping with his breathing, it must be really worrying for you both. Hopefully he will be over the worst very soon. Wishing you both well.

Thank you. He's probably on day 7 now if it was the start of it last week & I'm day 5, but we've both still got positive lateral flow tests. Mine was a much darker line today than on Saturday!

Hope your symptoms are less severe? Take good care of each other and hope by the weekend you both get negative lateral flow tests.

I’m sorry your husband hasn’t got the antivals. I think this is all a post code lottery. I’m on mtx and oral steroids, but I also have asthma and bronchiecstasis, a lung disease but not in the COPD family. I had my antiviral infusion on Monday.

Helen do you mind me asking you whether you had any side effects from the infusion and did you have a choice which anti viral to have? I am on the anti viral list only because I take tocilizumab for rheumatoid and on a nebuliser for bronchiectasis. I can't believe how many vulnerable haven't got access to anti viral treatment.

I didn’t have any side effects at all. My only issues were the time it took me to get to the hospital I had it done in took 60 minutes to drive there, whereas I’m 10 minutes from my usual hospital, and also the fact that it took 5 attempts to get the needle in, although I usually do have problems when giving blood!I think I probably got the infusion rather than the tablets because I said I could drive there - you’re not allowed to go on public transport. I got the impression that I’d said no to that question they’d have couriered the tablets to my house.

How awful you couldn't get the infusion at your usual hospital. Thank goodness you were well enough to drive. Pleased you got it all sorted and you were OK afterwards.

Apparently this is the only hospital in the entire West Midlands that do the antivirals!

I can't believe it, that is shocking. I used to live in the West Mids and thought they would be geared up for anti virals. So sorry for you but thank goodness you got the treatment in the end.

We're ok now thanks. Well apart from him being in pain due to fracturing a rib by coughing! It took me until day 13 to get a negative lateral flow result but I was allowed back at work on day 10!
