When bad the only explanation I can say is it’s like fireworks going off in my back,

Yes, if I forget to take my reliever inhaler before I do anything that will demand deeper breaths. The heavier deeper breathing with more intense physical activity, forces my ribs to move further than the small intercostal muscles between them can easily go. They overstretch and get very sore. If the very deep breathing is sudden and unexpected, some may even tear. Heat and cold treatment and circular fingertip massaging can help to treat them.

Could be an infection? Get your sputum checked.

I get this, lower front ribs through to back - pain is quite debilitating, only relief is a hot water bottle or lying down. I have been told it has nothing to do with my lungs ( I have emphysema & bronchiectasis) but it is more likely intercostal muscles between ribs. Also told physio would help but not been referred.

As copd progresses, we get increasing muscular-skeletal remodelling. I am quite a different shape than I used to be, and mostly not to do with age but with copd, and these changes cause pain.

If you can access a respiratory physio then it would be worth asking for exercises which could help you. This is why we need if we possibly can to exercise and keep our muscles functioning as well as they can. I also have copd, bronchiectasis plus asthma and the years are taking their toll!

Usually an indication that something is brewing. Send phlegm sample in straight away before starting rescue antibiotics.

I have had Asthma since I was 18. For years I had mentioned my ribs down my back ached when I had an asthma attack, I was looked at as if I was mad, told there was no connection then about 5 years ago it began to be listed as a side effect of an asthma attack. I know it is not COPD but there must be some similarities.
