Yes, should be awarded higher rate. Have all documentation ready and enclose with application form. The more paperwork the better . Its wise to go to Age Concern as they will fill the application form in for you. Attendance Allowance is great as not means tested.Good luck xxSheila

Hi anyone can apply for benefits but no one can guarantee you will get them. It's not what the illness is but how it affects you and your day to day living.

Sheila has given you good advice and Age UK will fill them out with you over the phone or in person and will come out to you. I have just applied for it with their help. Good luck.

I applied 3 years ago & was refused, last year I applied & told them more of the things I was unable to do in more detail & was awarded it, so good luck.

Keep a diary of what help you need and how your condition affects you with everything from washing and dressing to shopping cooking etc. The more detail the better. The criteria can be confusing so I would advise getting help in filling in the form. AgeUK are very good and your local council may have a disability rights advisors.

Hi Kikuyu - I too have "very severe COPD" and applied about a month ago. I was surprised to get a letter within 3 weeks saying I would recieve the higher rate...brilliant! I had recently had an assessment with the local COPD team and adding a copy of their report probably helped a great deal. However, I took my time filling it in and detailed the most difficult days and nights, using up all spare pages and opportunities to describe how hard life is. Go for it and get all the help you can get. Best of luck!

Iwould expect you to get it with severe COPD,but as others say get help with the forms if possible. It is about how you are impaired in daily life due to the medical condition. Good luck and hope it is easy to claim in your case.
