Kidney cancer

I have been diagnosed with cancer of the left kidney. My urologist says the entire kidney needs to be removed. The cancer is low yield and not spread. What can you eat, drink with one kidney, basically how do you live. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi winabago, I’m sorry to hear this! This is actually the British Lung Foundation forum where you are more than welcome however might find more help on the kidney forums. I have chronic kidney disease and there seems to be a wealth of help on there regarding diet etc. I hope this helps!

Oh no Winabago. I am so sorry to hear this. The positive side is you have another kidney. And if it is good working order you will do fine with one. I have stage three kidney disease and my kidneys are working around fifty percent. The medications I take due to my lung transplant has taken a toll. So yes we must watch our diet and drink plenty of water. Please do not despair and please let us know how you are doing. Thinking of you during this difficult time. Sending a gentle hug.

Thank you for the reply, yes it is very trying right now with a uncertain future. I hope you continue to do as possible to stay well with your stage three kidney disease, hugs to you. I will keep every one posted as to what happens with me.

Sorry about your diagnosis. Someone I worked with had a kidney removed. Once ghey recovered from the surgery they lived a normal life. All the best.

A good friend had a kidney removed earlier this yeay due to a large cancerous tumour. He made an amazingly speedy recovery & as far as I am aware is not restricted in the least re diet etc. He is 68yrs old. Good luck!

Hi winabago, I'm so sorry you've had this news. My brother in law Peter had the same diagnosis last year, he had his kidney removed in December last year by keyhole surgery. Being the uk he was home within a few days, his other kidney took over and he's not looked back, doing very well. He had to take it carefully for a while which he did and is back on the golf course

Coincidentally his own son in law, a busy farmer, had kidney disease, had one removed about 5 years ago and also recovered very well. Very best wishes to you, Peege

PS I should gave mentioned that Peter and Sam eat quite normally. I think they both have a healthy diet anyway but they do cut out irritants like alcohol & caffeine(tea, coffee, Coca-Cola, minimum chocolate). They have decaff fresh coffee & decaff Yorkshire tea. Peter has one small glass of red wine with his supper. I'll try to let you know what it was like for Peter post operation. He's 77 I think

I have no experience with kidney cancer but do know that people will donate a kidney to a family member, or other people if they are a match, if they have kidney disease and then the donor and the recipient both live with one kidney.

Sorry to hear this but good news it hasn’t spread. Basically my understanding is you can live a pretty normal life with one kidney. I know of people who have been “live donors “ for kidney transplants. I believe contact sports are unadvisable!

Is a shame your doctors didn’t fully explain to reassure you. Although possibly in your completely understandable panic you struggled to fully take in any information….

There is a forum on Health Unlocked called "CKD Support " (Chronic Kidney Disease). I had a kidney removed in November 2008; I have not needed any medication for it, no special diets etc (I just reduced my salt intake) and have had no after-effects at all because of it. Do, however, follow any medical advice given to you.

Hi Winabago.My mother had one of her kidneys removed because of cancer 7 years ago. It was removed by keyhole surgery and she was only in hospital 3 days. She lives life exactly as she did prior to her op, and has never had any problems since. Obviously there are scans and regular checkups after the event just to make sure that there are no further problems.

Good Morning, Hubby had the same as you nearly 2 years ago and he has been fine. Only in hospital 2 days. Just be careful with salt and protein . Apart from that life has been just the same as 1 kidney copes. Wishing you all the best.

Hi I worked on a renal ward for many years. If you think about it people donate kidneys all the time to relatives and the loss of the kidney makes little difference. There are some risks of developing high blood pressure etc but you can manage very well with one kidney. The kidneys have an over capacity and if one kidney is lost the other kidney can cope.

Sorry to hear, about your Cancer, but I have Good News for you..... assuming that you 'other' kidney if Working 'Fine' then, you can eat/ dink as Normal. I speak as someone who has had a Kidney Transplant- way back, in 2013.

As 'Strange Thing' about Kidneys is that, until your Total Function gets below about 25 percent, you have NO Noticeable Effects at all. So, assuming you 'other' Kidney is OK, you should be Fine.

I hope that 'this information' has put a Smile, on your face, winabago. I wish you well, with the Surgery- you will be 'Fine', my friend.

Best wishes that all will go well. When I was teaching a nice girl at my school had an accident and had to have a kidney removed. She was fine afterwards, much to the relief of her friends. I think the human body is rather over engineered.

Hello winnebago. My husband had a cancerous kidney which was removed just over a year ago. He had no other treatment for the cancer. He watches his diet because he was pre-diabetic but otherwise hasn't made any changes to his life style. His consultant told him he would be able manage very well with one kidney and he has. He's 75 and went back to work. Hope all goes well for you and will have as good an outcome.

I had my right kidney removed in 2007. I had a high grade cancer in my ureter. I subsequently had 11 bladder tumours burnt off.I have a cystoscopy every 12 month and to date no problems at all. I am nearly 88 years old.

I pretty much live a normal life for my age.
