Did you know ?

Apparently anyone on a maintenance dose of steroids and you require additional steroids through exasabation or infection the usual 30mg perday is supposed to be on top of your daily dose and just a five day course at this level has been shown to have no detrimental outcome for the patient, this is now included in something called the " gold guide" treatments admittedly this is an American guide but my copd nurses are already using this.

Just something for people to mull over.

On another topic entirely yesterday was a headache day , I had to pick my grandaughter from Manchester ( shes 16) and 3 of her friends ( same age or there abouts) as she had been shopping ,the ride home was a taylor swift , Rihanna (and god knows who else drive blasting through yhe cars Bluetooth system ).plus whispering followed by loud laughing with interjections of boys names i tried to tune out but ,ouch !. I had forgotten just how loud teenagers are ,my ears are still ringing . Have a breath easy day

Thank you for the info Dave. Pete usually does his own thing and then gradually reduces down to 10mg per day. Thankfully no exacerbation for over two years (touch wood). He’s had quite a reaction to the shingles jab though with a tender, red and swollen arm. Hope you’re keeping well apart from the headache and ringing ears…lol. Teenagers eh!

Take care xxx💜😘

Hope Pete's reaction to the shingles vaccine soon settles down Carole but hopefully preferable to having shingles xx

Useful information for those on daily prednisolone long term.

Many thanks soulboy for that info -it can take weeks for me to reduce prednisolone back to maintenance dose post excerbation -shall definitely raise this with respiratory team at next review .Ps loved your comment re teenagers!

Does your Gp provide ongoing rescue packs then ? Ours seem reluctant to do that 🤔

Yes ,they do ,it includes antibiotics and extra prednisolone with strict instructions to get urgent medical care should I need to start them. That's easier said than done as last time was on hold at surgery for over 1 hour 20 mins

If I can't get through or get a response from GP I ring my hospital respiratory nurse.

We always seem to be given the impression that they don’t like giving too much medication so we re always reluctant to ask for more than one rescue pack even though one doesn’t solve the problem 🤦🏻‍♀️ I think I’m going to have to start being more persistent !

Perhaps it depends on individual? If the rescue pack doesn't show improvement in reasonable length of time maybe the medical folk would prefer to see/evaluate the patient?

Wonder if it's a regional variation -have not been given two rescue packs at once so unable to help on that I 'm afraid, but have been given one after another following review.

Stay safe and well both of you x

Sorry I haven’t been clear , we haven’t had ( nor do we want ) more than one at a time but they don’t seem too keen on giving one after another it’s usually “ oh but you only had one on such a date “ They definitely don’t want to see Geoff , no Gp has seen him since January 2020

Oh golly am sorry to hear that your hubby hasn't seen a GP since Jan 2020.Trying to see one here hard especially if you are very unwell

1 :ring surgery and wait indefinitely on hold

2 speak to receptionist who is either very good or rubbish

3 explain in detail your medical issue.

4 either get referred to nurse or told someone will ring you

5 triage by nurse

6 phone appointment with GP

7 GP decides you need to be seen and then sees you

I do appreciate gp's are under enormous pressure but the days of your GP being a family doctor are long gone.Stay well both of you.

I can understand why folk simply turn up at a and e!

Yes exactly the same here but we don’t get step 7 🙄 I rang dr twice over course of two weeks in October ( must admit it’s pretty easy to get through to receptionist) got a telephone appointment at 2nd attempt. I told Dr Geoff was really struggling and panicking about running out of Oromorph she said it’s anxiety and made him an appointment with the mental health team ! two days later he was in hospital where he stayed for 10 days 🙄. Not a good state of affairs is it? Still we must soldier on , do the best we can and hope for the best 🤷🏻‍♀️ You take care of yourself too x
