Use of nebulisers

rossiedavid profile image

My daughter was using a nebuliser with a drug for pseudomonas but she was taken off it because it was making her more breathless .

She is still waiting for an alternative a month on !

But should she go back to using her original saline nebuliser meanwhile ?

is it advisable to use a saline nebuliser daily anyway ?

My daughter seems to be in denial regarding using a nebuliser at all but I’m sure it would still help .

She’s on preventive medication permanently.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Many Thanks

Please contact your daughters doctor and take his/her advice. Hoping your daughter feels better soon. Xxx

Hope you get this sorted soon - your daughter's treatment should not be left in limbo. Call the consultant who took her off the nebuliser and ask what the procedure should be going forward. All best wishes.

Hi rossiedavid. There are several of us who cannot tolerate various nebulised antibiotics. I have worked my way through all of them over the last 30 years. Now nebulising meropenem and seem to be tolerating it. . Isotonic saline is my go to goody for loosening the mucus and calming my lungs. Anecdotally pseudomonas hates saline but it has never been recognised as a treatment for it. ( too cheap probably). When not nebulising antibiotic I neb saline. Some people nebulise hypertonic saline but as it is in a much stronger concentration it may make your daughter wheezy. Your daughter's consultant should look at the situation and decide whether to try a different antibiotic when her lungs have calmed down.

I use a nebuliser daily with saline.Sometimes I cough a bit then some sputum comes up.

I’ve found that if I don’t use it for a few days,I start to have problems re sputum building up in my lungs.

I have. Interstital lung disease and also have preventive medication daily.

I can’t advise you because. I’m not a Dr.

I’m just relating my own experience.

Thank you for your help.Daughter was at her renal clinic today (she’s had a kidney transplant)

& thankfully her Renal Consultant sent her straight for an X ray even though it is not his remit.

She’s not had any response from her Respiratory specialist since the beginning of the week.

At least something is happening now at last !

I nebulise with Saline every time l use my nebuliser. I find that it calms my lungs and helps me to get rid of stubborn nasty. I am afraid you will have to be really proactive in order to get the right treatment fir your daughter Always keep in mind the sooner treatment is started the less damage will be done to the lungs. Wishing you both well d

Hi Rosiedavid, I was so sorry to hear about your daughter. Having had pseudomonas I know how it can affect her. Please get straight to your doctor as pseudomonas requires treatment and only certain antibiotics will clear it up. Ciprofloxacin is recommended by BLF, which is usually taken for 5 days in tablet form. I do hope that your daughter recovers quickly.
