what to take first?

Hi , can anyone help me please. I take Spirivia 2 puffs mornings but have now been given Fostair to take as well, 2 puffs mornings 2 puffs evenings and the nurse said take together mornings. Is it better to take the Fostair 1st then the Spirivia and should i leave a little bit of time between the 2 or do them both together? Not sure what to do to get the best results . I don,t really want to phone the surgery and book a telephone call with the nurse to ask. Many thanks.

Hi tavymaid, I don't suppose it would make any difference which way around you take them, buut if you are worried or unsure please get some advice from your respiratory nurse. Hope this helps let us know how you get on have a good day and take care 😊 Bernadette and Jack 🐕 xxxxxx

Hi tavymaid, I have fostair and used to have spiriva as well. I took the fostair first and then the spiriva about 15 ninutes later. Try to keep the spiriva to the same time each day and the fostair 12 hours apart.

Many thanks for your help. I took the Spirivia 1st and then Fostair straight after but since then have felt really chesty so tomorrow will try the Fostair then 15 mins break then Spirivia.

Hope you find that is better. Sometimes it's trial and error and it doesn't help when whoever prescribed something doesn't advise.

So true, trying to find the best way to use both inhalers. Many thanks for your reply.

I have bwen taking the spiriva first and the fostair about 15 mins later for years. Judging by other answers it doesn't seem to matter as long as it is the same time every day.

I was told to use ventolin 15 minutes before using the fostair years ago so when spiriva was added I took it later so as not to get my routine confused. Easily confused now! I do think it doesn't really matter as long as the time is the same each day.

You should alwsys take your relever first ( ventolin ect) then take any long acting broncodilators 5 min later giving the relever time to open your airways alowing the long acting broncodilators to work further into your lungs.

The nurse told me to take one inhaler at breakfast and one near to lunchtime.

Thank you for your reply, yea it,s trying to find that balance so they both work and not make you feel worse.

There doesn’t seem to be a simple answer and have read both ways as to which should be taken first. The last I read was to take the Spiriva first and wait about 20 minutes for it to open your airways a bit and then take the fostair so it can get deeper into your lungs. Of course that recommendation may have changed again. You should try it one way for a week and then the other way for a week and see if you notice any difference and do what seems to be the most effective for you.Good luck.

Haha, I think you will have to go back to your doctor and get a few more meds for that, but wouldn’t that be fun.

I tried Spirivia 1st yesterday then Fostair and felt awful, chesty most of day and a headache so today tried Fostair 1st then half an hour later took my Spirivia and so far so good.🤞

I was prescribed both Spiriva and Fostair just over a month ago (two puffs once a day for Spiriva; two puffs twice a day for Fostair). I was told it didn't matter which came first but just to take two puffs of each of them straight after one another each morning, and to take the remaining two puffs of Fostair 12 hours later.

Thank you for your help. Iv found if i take both at the same time i get a headache and go chesty, today i took Fostair 1st then Spirivia half an hour later and doing that seem to be ok, a bit of a nightmare doing it separately, it,s trying to find the best way without feeling rubbish.

Many thanks for reply tavymaid. Great shame that you have headache and go chesty. I get suddenly tired and lethargic and "brain fogged", and also had trouble walking up and back for flu jab today - a little bit "lightheaded" and very slow. Needed to concentrate very carefully on walking. That is just not (or, at least never has been until now) me. Let's hope we both get on much better from here on in ! Very best wishes to you.
