Dysfunctional breathing training

Hi everyone just an update on my physio a week ago which I found interesting, I met with the physio and explained a bit about my self and she asked me what symptoms I was getting she had pen and paper at hand and she wrote down atleast 12 symptoms I was getting on a regular day to day basis from mouth breathing , tingling around my eyes and out of breath more quickly, constant yawning when walking, breath holding, and sying and list goes on. I explained I have mild obstruction not copd as my doctor and nurse keeps saying which to this day still confuses me and supriseinly enough she said it was nothing to do with my lung obstruction and that it's probably more to do with my mental health even though she explained they are real symptoms so after a barrel of questions I led on the bed and she put her hand on my tummy and asked me to breath in for 2 them breath out for 4 only with my nose so I done this for a while and she said in all the years she has been a lung physio I've got a very good diaphragm breathing method which is good to but what she did catch me doing was sying and holding my breath im my 50 minutes assessment the holding breath just happens sometimes it's like I forget to breath. Anyway moving forward she asked if I would like to see her again yes I replied so I will be seeing her next week, ive been trying this technique breath in for 2 out for 4 with just my nose it's very hard a week has passed im seeing a slight improvement like everything else I guess it takes time. I also check in with my lung nurse for reassurance and my doctors ect as they are very supportive and they all say I havant got copd just mild obstruction once again I'm confused but I'm sure it will sink in one day my doctor says I would only get a chest infection like someone that has never smoked I gave up smoking 2 years ago not on any medication for my lungs although these symptoms are mimicking copd in some degree and its making me more anxious it's a visious circle, my doctors keep telling me I've got really good lungs I have to trust them I am finally being put on the highest dose of duloxatine for my mental health in the next week I will keep you posted xx

Im glad to read your positive post bryan. It also appears you have a good physio who will inspire confidence. Keep up the good work, you're getting there.

I am glad you are being helped …I had my breathing pattern assessed both by a nurse , and a Buteyko practioner .One doctor noted that I was breathing with my upper chest , tight shoulders , little air was getting into my lower lungs at all . I was reverse breathing too ….all those times in school being told to hold in your stomach , push out your chest , like a soldier on parade . Just after the war I guess, many of our teachers had been in the forces . Showing my age now.

Always was a mouth breather as a child , my home town was known as catarrh city at one time , and the accent was very nasal.

The Buteyko tutor commented on my sighing , yawning ….a sign of hidden hyperventilation she said . She mentioned it can cause tingling also.

Anxiety/ breathlessness/ anxiety is difficult to change , but keep up with the gentle nose breathing ……gentle gentle with relaxed diaphragm and shoulders.

One of my asthmatics friends had her breathing pattern monitored by her GP, he let her talk and then mentioned when certain topics were introduced her breath changed to fast and high .

I had a machine which monitored breath rate…..how many breaths a minute ….even just thinking about problems and difficulties sent my breath rate up.

Someone recommended listening to music which had 60 beats a minute ..helps to relax.

Have you tried meditation and mindfulness ….I started with a teacher at first ….some find it difficult .

The electronic conservator in my portable oxygen pack shows the read out of breaths per minute. It drops to the teens when I’m sat in my chair, and rises to 30-40 while mobile.

Before I was diagnosed with COPD, I used to forget to breathe in, sometimes for half a minute. I also had disordered breathing and hyperventilated before doing anything strenuous, which made doing things all the harder. Doing a Pulmonary Rehab course at my local doctor's surgery sorted that out.
