Friday 13th - what a lucky day forMy husband . He was I believe quite close to death and docs were querying whether to put him on a machine to take over breathing, ECMO I think they call it . IPF had finally got the better of him and ironically he was taken in to A & E just as he was about to sign the consent forms to be listed for lung transplant. After strong antibiotics and lots of oxygen and great care from the staff at Addenbrookes The Papworth surgeons decided that he could go on the list . He was too ill to go home and was moved to Papworth Hospital . We all thought the worst . on Friday 13th he was told they had a potential lung for him and he was top of the list due to his condition. We couldn’t believe that it was a match and the operation went ahead . 4 days later he is doing amazingly well. The surgeons and staff are brilliantly clever and our thanks for out to the team and of course the donor and family . It’s early days, we are in shock , but optimistic that things will work out . Our immense thanks To Papworth and donor family and Addenbrookes .

I’m so pleased to hear your news. My Husband had IPF and passed away seven years ago. It was when the Perfenidone first came on the scene. Unfortunately he wasn’t allowed to have it at that time. I believe at 74 he was too old. So he had nothing. The disease just took its course. I’m not bitter about it as that’s how it was then. I’m just so pleased when I hear how far they’ve now come and how they are now saving people like your Husband. I’m sure you will more happy years with him. Good luck and wrap him in cotton wool as they say.
Thank you . I am so sorry for the loss of your husband . My husband was on both Pirfenidone and Esbriet, after a coupleOf years he lost too much weight on one and had a sun reaction to the other . It’s such a horrible disease isn’t it ? Hopefully they will find other medication to help in the future . We are not sure if it did help but he went 5 years from diagnosis so who knows. My Husband had four years from beginning to end. I’ve now got a problem myself. I have been in hospital four times in the last three years. Once with pneumonia. Then Aspergillosis which I passed out with because I couldn’t breathe. I was given steroids which messed up my bones and I had two fractures. They discovered when I had an XRay that I also had another fracture that I could remember having but wasn’t diagnosed at the time. Which made a total of three fractures. The main one putting me in hospital for twelve days. I was put on injections which I had to give myself every day for two years plus having a calcium tablet twice a day. After the two years the injection was changed as you can’t stay on the first one due to it could give you cancer. Anyway five months into having the new injection which is six monthly I have now got four more fractures in my back which put me in hospital for a couple of days as it was affecting my breathing. A scan confirmed the breaks. To get to the main point I happened to read my discharge sheet and on it was I have a 5mm nodule and Interstial changes. I checked my 2018 discharge summary and Interstitial changes were also on there. Now from what I have read on the Pulmonary lung site Interstial means Pulmonary Fibrosis. I am trying to get some information from my Consultant. I rang the Lung Centre and explained I am concerned but have heard nothing yet. I suppose no news is good news. I’m probably worrying about nothing but there’s no harm in asking and having a clear picture of what’s going on. I’m still on the Pulmonary Fibrosis site but don’t post or read anything to be honest it just sits there. It’s too depressing to read the posts. This is why I was happy to see yours. It is such good news.
Hi, I’ve just read your post. Interstitial covers quite a few lung diseases, and not always fibrosis. Hopefully you will get details of the form of your ILD from your doctors. Hope you do not mind my jumping in on your post, but I can imagine how worried you must be, based on your very sad knowledge of fibrosis.
Thank you mary1956. It’s nice that you understand. I’m pretty sure the damage was caused by the pneumonia but it was the word interstitial, the looking at my fingers each time and the fact that they were keeping me going back to see the lung specialist regularly until the lockdown. It never dawned on me it would be Interstial or even that I would get a Pulmonary nodule. I never really knew why they were having me back. Until! I saw the discharge sheet. I’m sure or hope it’s nothing bad but it is a bit worrying. I need to have a magic wand and wave it away. 😁

What fantastic news. I'm so pleased for your husband and you because I know you will have been turning yourself inside out looking after him with this horrible thing that is IPF. My husband had the same disease and deteriorated very rapidly over 12 months. He was confirmed on the transplant list in April this year and had a double lung transplant on 29/6 this year. He is doing very well considering he was literally almost at deaths door. It's quite a long road back because of all the medication required to avoid rejection but oh so much better than the alternative. He will be well looked after and I wish you both all the best for better times ahead.
