Lung Transplant: “Dry Run”

Hi, Of the people who have had or are listed for a lung transplant, can you tell me how you coped with “dry runs” ( not sure what else to call them)

I got called to Harefield, 2 days ago, as they potentially had suitable lungs for me. I had all the bloods, swabs, was prepped for theatre etc. Then it was decided that the lungs were unsuitable and I was sent home.

I know this happens and I was prepared. However I’m feeling absolutely gutted. I’m trying to focus on the positives of having received a call and getting so close.

Have others experienced this? If so how did you cope psychologically?

Hi Mary, sorry to hear your first call resulted in a cancellation and i can understand the disappointment you must be feeling. I got my call just over 2 years ago and to be honest I really expected it to end as yours did, in fact I told my family not to come with me as I would probably be home in a few hours. With luck it wont be long before your call comes, but also get mentally ready for any scenario, i have spoke to people at Wythenshaw who had 3, 4,and 5 dry runs before the event finally happened. Maybe give your TX co-ordinator a ring, as where these matters are concerned they can be a great help and that's what they are there for.

wishing you the very best for the future.

Steve

Best of wishes Mary. I'm stateside so I'm not sure your experience will be like mine, but I also had a dry run. The surgeon rejected the lungs, because he saw some scarring that concerned him. I was already 'under' and when I came to -- it was difficult to comprehend fully what had transpired and what had not.

In my case, within a month I received another call and I successfully got my new lungs Nov,28th,2020. They are working well.

In hindsight I'm glad the surgeon rejected the first pair. You don't want to start out with lungs that are not up to par.

Hang in there!!

JCL

Wow, that must have been awful. Luckily I didn’t get to the anaesthetic room. They could feel an unexplained lump on the donor lungs, and rejected them. It’s good that they are so careful, and I’m hanging on to that fact.

Hi Mary. Disappointing for you obviously but hopefully it won't be long before your next call. Think of it as a practice run for the real thing. Good luck and best wishes.

What a negative blow for you Mary I can understand how deflated you feel. I pray it’s not too long for the next suitable lung. Try to keep your spirits up, you are obviously a priority. Keep well 🤞🤞😘

Thank you. It’s reassuring that I got a call only 4 weeks on Harefield’s list. No news from Birmingham.

Yes getting a call in such a short time on their list must be a good sign . I had a call from Birmingham last week and was put back on the active list so a little bit of hope again.Back in clinic next week to for my 3 month assessment so be able to find out a bit more then

Hi Mary, 😊👋

I have been looking for your post 😃 . It is tough when it comes to dry runs. But the good news is you are literally at the top of the list now. The lungs you receive will be perfect for you, and the timing will be absolutely perfect. So please keep faith. You are one of the lucky ones who have managed to make it to this stage of the process. Not long now.

Cas xx ❤️
