Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine recipients have lower antibody levels targeting the Delta variant

Levels of antibodies in the blood of vaccinated people that are able to recognise and fight the new SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant first discovered in India (B.1.617.2) are on average lower than those against previously circulating variants in the UK, according to new laboratory data from the Francis Crick Institute and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) UCLH Biomedical Research Centre, published today (Thursday) as a Research letter in The Lancet.

The results also show that levels of these antibodies are lower with increasing age and that levels decline over time, providing additional evidence in support of plans to deliver a vaccination boost to vulnerable people in the Autumn.

And, the researchers support current plans to reduce the dose gap between vaccines since they found that after just one dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, people are less likely to develop antibody levels against the B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant as high as those seen against the previously dominant B.1.1.7 (Alpha) variant, first found in Kent.

Its news like this that makes me wonder if I should have bothered with the vaccine.

It is the last sentence that is important.

"the researchers support current plans to reduce the dose gap between vaccines since they found that after just one dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, people are less likely to develop antibody levels against the B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant as high as those seen against the previously dominant B.1.1.7 (Alpha) variant, first found in Kent"

ie. it is those with just a single dose, that are of real concern. This was bound to happen sooner or later with a new variant. It also does not mention anything about B and T cells, a recent study has found that the antibodies generated by B cells are a lot more robust and diverse.

This is also disconcerting. It's good that it's out in the open, so that the powers that be know and should take speedy action.

I must say just when I was thinking great I can enjoy going out and shopping etc we have been told masks will no longer be compulsory and I guess no more sanitizer and social distancing. So back in our shells ..... such a pity for the economy and just when spending in the high street is so needed , speaking to a local shop keeper they are very concerned as faith is deteriorating. Also imagine with all our over worked underfunded hospitals if we were all forced by law to be hygienic how wonderful it would be to have no more flue epidemics 😊👍🏻

I hadn't heard this? I work in a supermarket and feel vaguely safe because of customers wearing masks, distancing and using sanitiser. Cases here have been rising and I'm quite concerned about it, but I'd be most unhappy if masks, distancing and using sanitiser were no longer required.

I’m so sorry to have worried you but it seems that is going to happen if the government gets its way but it’s so stupid I do hope they realise that it will cut consumers like me by half and damage the economy and therefore change their minds . The more people complain the better as it’s those at the top who think rather stupidly we will rush out and spend but actually I’m pretty certain the reverse will be true. Please don’t worry and again I’m so sorry as my message was intended for two greys who is very informed XX no worries yet , it’s just a rumour on the news .

It was me who was eavesdropping on your conversation! I think ending the use of masks would deter customers like yourself, but also be if concern to staff. I know there are some people out there who can’t wait for an end to restrictions and having to wear a mask or wash hands (did people not wash before?) but I think the majority of people just want to continue being safe and also helping to keep others safe by taking these precautionary measures. It seems the more cases are increasing, the more restrictions are being eased, which seems a strange logic to me. Thank you for your reply and I agree, 2greys is indeed a very informed person. 👍

HH in a land where track and trace is probably done by the postman and you know everybody by name i do hope that you will be as safe as the few houses that exist and likewise your sheep will prosper too. 🙃😻🐎🐑

😊 Thank you 🤣 Yes I'm sure I worry too much. I feel like I've been living like a hermit for over a year (well, a hermit who works in a shop) and now suddenly people are traveling to and from my rock and it's like the real world just knocked on my door. But I am overly paranoid which is not a good thing and I should be confident in the vaccine, and should learn from my sheep 🐑 🐑🐏🐑🐑🐑 who don't worry about such things and just enjoy eating the dandelions 🌻

Greet the foriegners with a kindly smile, they bring wealth to your battered isle but quietly warn them that your sheep do not take kindky to infected visitors and have been known to supplement their vegetable diet with human flesh if they can smell even the hint of viral activity.that should do the trick.😂😹
