Should my husband quit his job to keep me safe?

Husband's work had 6 COVID diagnoses. I'm 69, COPD/emphysema. FEV1 only 27% at last check a few years ago. Should he quit his job for my safety? My income is only $1,250/mo from Social Security after paying for Medicare. We live in California, U.S.A. and we don't know if he can get unemployment assistance. Any advice?

Sorry to hear you are struggling at the moment.

You said your last check was years ago. Aren't you regularly observed/checked by a doctor? What does he recommend?

Quitting the job is a big step and shouldn't make too fast. What about unpaid free days?

On the street, at the supermarket, at the fuel station, everywhere could be someone who has Covid-19 without knowing it. I don't think only quitting the job would solve the problem.

When you are afraid of getting sick can't you self-isolate yourself in one room and keep everything clean and disinfected and reduce the contact with your husband and he wears a mask?

Hi nice to meet you. I think you need to speak to someone else from California. Whilst we have members from all over the world the vast majority here are Brits who have no knowledge of USA/Californian employment law or benefits.You of course are more than welcome to stay with us but this type of question would be better asked on an American site such as the American Lung Association.

Very tricky question revans2001. Over here in the uk we practice all the barrier procedures if one person in the household is very vulnerable. If your husband can do these then there shouldn't be too much to worry about. It's compulsory to wear masks over here to protect others. Personally as I live alone, I'll nip out wearing mask and disposable gloves to get essentials when necessary. On return remove my outer wear and shoes at the door, all shopping likely to be touched by anyone one else is wiped with a clean cloth and antiviral.. might your husband read up about infection control and cross contamination before chucking his job?

I’m sorry to hear about your predicament. It must be very stressful for you. I live in California, and think that if one chooses to quit his/her job, one may not collect unemployment. Could your husband take a leave of absence, and go back after you have both received the Covid vaccine? Perhaps take vacation days and sick leave time, if his employer agrees? I hope that you can find a way to make this workout for you.

I think quitting his job is a bit drastic! Sheild yourself carefully and make sure you get the vaccine as soon as it is available .It would be impossible to avoid all risk of Covid .
