Hi can anyone tell me what your oxygen levels have to drop to when you are advised to have home oxygen, Thank You

Here is your answer,although low o2 sats are a good indicator of hypoxia and the need for long term oxygen therapy the requirement is determined by anaysis of your blood gases by your respiratory team.

I’ve been on oxygen since Dec 2017 on my consultants say so when he discharged me back to GP. I’ve never had blood gases taken. Respiratory nurse tried and failed. Was never tried again. I’m on 16/24 2 L and 3 ambulatory.

How strange,lady with the lovely name,you should have them done on a yearly basis otherwise nobody would know when you might need to increase the rate to compensate for decline and or if you retain co2 which would limit the safe amount and rate you receive it given that oxygen for us lungies is as much a medicine as are our inhalers?

Hmmmm I hadn’t given it much thought to be honest Skis. I never mentioned it on my 6 monthly reviews because I think the nurse must have just added a number to my notes otherwise surely someone would have noticed lol I had never been tested. I’m so thick skinned the needle despite several attempts that day just wouldn’t go through 😂. I don’t want the nurse in trouble and equally if she has fiddled my notes then I would be treated as a fibber!!! Difficult to know what to do but what the heck I’m fine anyway so ‘nae bother’ lol.

All well with me and the scruffster and i am about 50 % better with my swallowing and getting enough cheese down me to account for my recent cholesterol leap.so iam fatty on the inside and thin outside lol x

That is very odd blood gas check can be done by taking a sample from your wrist or ear. hcahealthcare.co.uk/our-ser....

If you get the choice I'd go for the ear lobe one.

Both test are usually carried out at the hospital not a GP surgery. Oxygen is something the consultant usually prescribes.

At the time the nurse had a trainee who was trying too . I think both became agitated thinking they were hurting me plus the dept was busy so the easy option was to leave it. Should I be offered a blood gas test again I’ll suggest ear. Thanks for info. 😀

As long as you feel ok on it, thats the main thing, you might want to check out symptoms for oxygen toxicity and oxygen deprivations so you are aware of these too

The ear test can be done in your own home by a properly trained respiratory nurse Gladwyn,i had mine done only a month ago at home and it only takes about 10 mins to do. x

I wouldn't wait to be asked. Everything Skis said is true! Arterial blood is the only way they can check gases, to see if you are a retainer. Best wishes, J.

It was the consultant who said he was going to put me on oxygen then referred me back to my GP. Afterwards I was given 6 monthly appointments with respiratory nurses in hospital where they tried to do the blood gas check. Sorry if I wasn’t clear in previous post.

My husband had the specialist oxygen nurse visit from the hospital to do an assessment . It was all about recovery , she tested walking to the kitchen and back to see what they dropped to , then as long as they recovered to the required level he didn’t need oxygen .

Hi I have an oxygen concentrator which I have to use when I move about, as my oxygen level drops to 83 and has been known to drop to 79 sometimes both are quite low, I do not need my concentrator when I am sat resting as my levels go up to 95/96 I was told that anything below 90 needs to be monitored, I hope I have helped to answer your question have a very nice day take care best wishes regards Bevanboy (John)

I only know from the finger monitor, under 94% is already a reason, but also depends what your 'ailment' is for them also suggesting long term oxygen therapy at home.🤔

Hi im the same, I'm on oxygen concentater for sleeping number2 I had a reader on my finger and a wrist band for 2 nights to determine the amount I need. And I walk on number 5 with a liquid air flask I never have bloods taken unless I go into hospital which Is very rare. I just have a six minute walk every year to determine levels, my level drops to low 80s without it. I've been on it for over 10 years x
