Has anyone have success with Symbicort? Thinking about switching to it. Any comments will help me make a decision.

Brilliant, used it for years. Now much less since adjusting my diet due to diabetes diagnosis. But I would recommend it from personal experience. But remember we are all different. Good luck.

Has your diet change helped with your breathing? What did you change?

My breathing is more or less the same, well controlled but what has changed is I need only a quarter of the Symbicort I was taking daily previously. I take 200/6 and was using 8 'puffs' a day - now, after being able to decrease over a period of about 4 months earlier this year, I only need 2 a day.

I gave up all sugar, processed grains - cake biscuits etc and only eat a small amount of whole grain oatcakes each day - or a a slice of whole grain sour dough rye toast. Best wishes. :)

Thank you. I don’t have added sugar in coffee or tea ect. I do eat well, but wouldn’t like to risk decreasing medication. Understanding that most of us would love not to need medications (chemicals) in our bodies.

I only managed it because normally my body knows when it needs the evening dose. And I stopped having this evening warning and kept forgetting to take the usual 4. And when this didnt make me any worse, in fact I was still better than previously, I would experiment with missing one dose every three days, then every two, then eventually daily. I never anticipated being able to decrease like that.

My nurse knew I was doing this - she has often referred to the Smart system for taking Symbicort. This means you can take an extra one to your normal prescription when you need it. So I suppose I was doing this in reverse. Ive been very stable on the two a day amount for about 4 months now so it was the right thing to do . She is thinking of changing my meds to a non-steroidal inhaler but Im resisting as the anti-cholinergic ones dry me out too much.

Now with autumn molds etc, I think I will probably have to go up to three a day. We'll see. Im very lucky to have an oxygen nurse who will work with me to get the best possible result. But everyone has to do what works for them. :)

In short it works and it is the best one for me.

I take it and would not have anything else. Sadly at my previous surgery they decided to take it away without notice and put me onto something else. I remember one they tried was fostair but for me it was not good. In fact all of the inhalers they tried failed and I was hit by chest infections one after another all that year until my consultant sent them a second very scathing letter after they refused to listen to her advice first time round. They finally gave it back but the damage was evident. My yearly infections were now much worse and after another few years and a change of surgery I was on the higher dose inhaler and now required azithromycin through autumn to spring to keep infections in check. They give me serious stomach cramps on the days I take them though so had not started this years yet and lo and behold I am currently fighting my first infection of the year because I was off them too long (4-ish months). I also have a breathing disorder and suffer with unstable throat issues which cause a build up of phlegm to sit on my vocal chords and make me need to clear my throat constantly!

I hope it works for you. If it does don’t let them take it away.

Although we are all different I must say I’ve been on it for years too and more than happy.

My consultant said he’d much rather try to use this to keep me steady without side effects of tablets, and then top up with steroid tablets after antibiotics if need be in a flare up. Since then I’ve also been prescribed the Azithromycin and fortunately for me no side effects with these either.

Hope the Symbicort helps you too.

🤞
